Easter Egg Word Blender Mr 6 is in Grade One now and while he’s blending sounds easily, he’s starting to learn how tricky spelling can be. I corrected one of his words the other day and a discussion emerged about how the long a sound can be spelt with a-e, ai, ei or ay. English can be difficult indeed! I made this quick Easter egg spinner not so much for reading but for reinforcing spelling. We went on to talk about the meanings of some of the words e.g. dismay. This could easily be adapted for a range of phonetic sounds or maths facts. We’re featuring eggs as our learning and play prompt this week. How will you use them? OH SNAP!!!! With this game we can practise speed reading and pronunciation. The first player picks a stick and reads the word. If it's correct, the player keeps the stick. If incorrect, place the stick back into the glass.Then, the other player picks up a stick and reads the word and so on. But if a player picks up a "OH Snap!" stick, the player must then put all the sticks back into the glass! Rhyming Rabbit After reading the Rhyming Rabbit by Julia Donaldson for home reading practise, I set this up quickly for Mr 7, my first grader, to practise spelling some rhyming words I taped some boxes and added our Coko Rhyming and Lower Consonant blocks from @worksatplay but you could just add magnetic letters or a dry erase marker.
