People of the Barrier Canyon culture once occupied the region of the San Rafael Swell. They left these pictographs painted on an overhanging wall in Buckhorn Draw. It's not clear how old these are but other Barrier Canyon style artifacts have yielded isotopic and thermoluminescence ages of between 1,500 and 7,000 years. It seems that they were here for a while. These pictographs were made of a pigment of primarily red ochre with some unknown organic binder. The various tones may indicate other pigment sources and perhaps different dates for some figures which, to my untrained eye, appear to be restorations of older figures. They were a hunter-gatherer society which left very few clues to their presence aside from their mysterious rock art which is scattered throughout much of the Colorado Plateau. Barrier Canyon art includes some fairly consistent themes. These include anthropomorphic figures, spirit figures, and figures of humans having intimate relationships (communicative) with animals. The Barrier Canyon peoples predate the Ancestral Puebloans (a.k.a. Anasazi). Can you imagine living on the Colorado Plateau as a hunter-gatherer? I don't have to imagine it. I know what it's like. As a very young man, my first specialization was in desert survival in that region. I spent nearly three years living partially off the land there and for about three of those months, I was alone and lived completely off of the land. It was really a pretty good life but I must admit that I didn't have to survive over a Winter.
