Hello Pinhole World! We've been living in the workshop, hence the limited updates online. But rest assured, the cameras are reaching final assembly stages! We caught up the Ondurama 6x17 and 4x5's that were behind, worked many days applying the Pinholes into the shutters (this is ongoing), and finalized the first batch of 150 cameras! It's been another productive week and weekend, and we are ready to have another full week of assembly. Our goal is to ship most of the cameras by the end of this month, accepting all motivational vibes! ️ Who's excited with us!?

Selections from my series “Art Dreaming About Itself” Pinhole photography- in which a tiny aperture is used in place of a lens- has been an obsession of mine for decades now. Pinholes traditionally give the user the ability for an "unlimited" depth of field, but I realized early on that using an un-optimized pinhole would create the opposite effect: unlimited out of focus. The addition of a turret made it possible to control exactly how soft in rendering I wanted the works to be. My custom Cuboid camera also benefited from an internal multi-aspect ratio masking system so film formats from 6 x 4.5 through 6 x 8 were all possible. This series- Art Dreaming About Itself- combines this unique out-of-focus pinhole with overlapping frames and hand-held, minutes-long exposures. These works are a good example of the constant dialogue I have with myself on the matter of having control, but not too much, and allowing room for unexpected things to happen. All images in this series were made with Transparency film (E6) cross-processed (Xpro) with C41 chemistry in my studio, developed using a Jobo Processor I have used since the mid 90's. In many cases I did a subtle bleach bypass to enhance the contrast and tweak the color palette. My wife, author Eve Schaub wrote this about this series: "Bold, expansive stretches upon the wall depict familiar-feeling places, and the extreme wide-angle view mimics the field of human vision, yet, the camera interprets this information very differently from the brain: distorting it rather than interpreting it. The abstraction inherent to the use of a custom, one-of-a-kind pinhole camera is intensified further by the use of unique, handmade papers whose details and imperfections create dimensionality, blurring the line between 'image' and 'medium.'" When E6 processed film were discontinued by Kodak back in 2012 I decided to stop making this series as its color palette and contrast was unmatched in traditional color negative material. Now that Kodak Ektachrome E100 is back in 35mm- and soon I hope in 120!!- artworks like these may again be possible in the near future. @kodak @cinestillfilm @kodakcameraclub_roc

We haven’t made a post about pinhole cameras lately but that in no way means our interest in these lensless wonders has dimmed. Rather, they are such an ever-present part of our photographic lives that we stop paying any special attention to them. But with summer bringing brighter days we have shifted how we use our pinhole cameras. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ See, one trick with pinhole cameras is that even with slow ASA 100 film, a bright summer day can result in exposures often in the ½ to 1 second range. This can be kind of an awkward zone of exposure for pinhole cameras. On one hand, it isn’t long enough to get the kind of motion blur we are used to with these cameras. Certain subjects can still be blurred, but others, like clouds or smoothing out bodies of water or making crowds disappear, are more difficult to attain. The other factor with these exposure lengths is that it is harder to open and close the camera without generating camera shake and at these short of shutter speeds, any shake constitutes a much larger part of the overall exposure. Now, we know several photographers who embrace this; they load up their cameras with 400 or 3200 speed film and go completely handheld to interesting creative effect. And some pinhole cameras have cable release sockets to help in these cases as well.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Yet another solution is to use filters as more and more commercially-available pinhole cameras have filter thread attachments. Zero Image, Reality So Subtle, and ONDU are just a few that now allow attaching filters to the camera. Pick up an ND8 3-stop filter and that 1 second exposure is now 8 seconds (a bit more with reciprocity failure in fact). Or use this as an opportunity to try some infrared film and pair the camera with a red 25 (about 2.5 stops) or an R72 (give it about 6 more stops). Or go whole hog and get a 9 stop ND, making that 1 second exposure a whopping 8 minute, middle-of-the-day exposure (better actually quadruple that to at least 30 minutes for reciprocity)! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We have all these filters for your pinhole cameras and we’ll give you links in the bio for them to help point the way. SOLARGRAPHY A few weeks ago I had a big party at my cabin and one of my friends kids mentioned they were camped out next to one of my cameras on the edge of the field. . A camera I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT. . I was so confused so I went to investigate and sure enough... So this is what was inside of it after an 11 month exposure. The camera was just pointing directly into the woods without a central focus or main subject.
