In honor of #pollinatorweek, here’s a little bit about the location of our bee hives . . . Through all of our reading during our bee prep, we learned that bees are more likely to go to work early if the sun shines on their hive early in the day. Because of this, we built our hive stands on the edge of the wood line that receives direct sunlight early in the morning. As the day goes on, the hives start to receive partial shade followed by full shade due to the adjacent trees. This will be especially important during the heat of the summer because the full shade will aid in the temperature regulation of the hive. The hives will receive more sunlight in the winter months when the trees are bare, which will hopefully aid in keeping the hives warm. . . Our raised bed pollinator garden is situated directly in front of the hives to provide our honey bees with a super accessible source of pollen and nectar. Interestingly, the honey bees prefer the flowers in our garden and the native pollinators always hang out around the pollinator garden. . . Our vegetable garden is located on the other side of the pollinator garden, and it is in the direct flight path of the bees as they exit the hive. We also placed the bee waterers in the garden since the garden is a favorite hang out spot for the honey bees. Although we know that some of the worker bees will fly miles from the hive each day to collect pollen, nectar and water, we tried our very best to provide lots of pollen and water sources close by so that our bees don’t have to fly so far to forage. It is our hope that these small details will help our colonies grow and thrive.
