My day of habit logging as suggested by James Clear’s Atomic Habits revealed a lot to me about my moments of confusion when it comes to certain tasks that I want to happen each day, but are still inconsistent. . The idea of habit stacking and using the end of one habit as a cue to start the next one has been very helpful so far! . Since my morning routine flows well up until a point, so adding on clear, simple cues to the previous end-point had worked surprisingly well so far! . I’ve tried calendar blocking and planning out chunks of time for every task, but then I find myself rushing, watching the clock or feeling behind.. and there’s no really no reason to feel like I’m “behind schedule” for something like eating breakfast. . Giving myself a stack of flow-into-the-next habits instead (that I can spend a flexible amount of time on without watching the clock) is simpler and feels better! . ✨ Donjon. It was after I wore myself out recording a million takes of this one that I knew I needed to start working through the discomfort of single takes. . It was also after playing Afternoon of a Faun in Lea Pearson’s master class in April. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t let go of the intense holding and shaking in my legs.. and while trying all the right things and methods of acceptance to feel more free and self-compassionate, I felt worse and worse because I hated the feeling, and it wasn’t going away. When I actually played, I shook so badly in the middle of the first phrase that I couldn’t form an embouchure anymore, and I literally reached a breaking point. I burst into tears. I had a panic attack while playing an excerpt in front of other people, and that’s something that had never happened to me before. . I reached a breaking point of not trusting myself to play in one take. I had been training myself to not trust for a long time, and my experiences of performing something like an excerpt in one go in front of others have been very limited recently. . I used to love auditioning, and I always felt so comfortable and genuinely excited to play at my back-to-school auditions - I rarely felt nervous, and if I did, I was positive anyway. I didn’t have to employ any tactics to feel better, I could execute without an issue. . I thought that the better I got at playing, the more confident I’d become, and nerves would be even less of an issue. But that’s not at all the case. My abilities have improved, but my confidence in myself had plummeted. I lost the external validation of weekly lessons and studio classes. I was on my own, and the story I tell myself about a lot of things is that I’m not enough. . So after reaching my breaking point and being willing to be real with myself, the practice of a few first takes, and a wonderful counselor who has helped me heal my own feelings of unworthiness, I feel a deep sense of confidence returning in a way that‘s even more genuinely self-compassionate and trusting than before. . . . . #flute #flutesolo #flutist

#100daysofpractice • Day 11 ✨ More Jolivet and a close-up phone-on-stand set up, since I was using it anyway to watch my face while listening back! . I’ve been focusing on this section since last night, utilizing a half tempo, one-line-at-a-time at least 10 times each tally method to become familiar with the notes. (As seen in the second pic.) I really like this method for learning anything unfamiliar - I find that it keeps me focused and I tend to experience more targeted progress. (Without it, I’m likely to jump around to other things and not get anything done.) . While doing the slow repetitions, I was mindful about keeping my vowel shapes and embouchure consistent and resonating in the sinuses - because that’s what I’m going to need to have a consistent sound while playing faster. . #100daysofpractice Day 4 ✨ Donjon No. 1 . My favorite etude. I’m working on being able to consistently let air flow out. I can tend to hold my breath and hold tension in the torso in a way that restricts the sound and makes it difficult to change color where I’d like to, (especially to end phrases delicately), so I’m continuing to be more aware of breathing and patterns of closing. . I’m also staying aware of how well I’m balancing in the hands and how light and easy the fingers are, especially in this! I’ve been feeling wobbly and uneven recently. . An overall goal for me with this round of 100 days is to feel like I’m sounding great on the first go.
