A tale of two pregnancies. The picture on the right was taken six years ago when I was 22 weeks pregnant with triplets. The picture on the left was snapped today, now 32 weeks pregnant with just one baby. ….. It’s the same outfit I pulled out of storage, and almost the same size baby bump. While the smiles are genuine, they tell a very a different story of two pregnancies that are polar opposites. ….. On the right, I was in the midst of hospital bed rest. I was just four days away from when I went into labor, more than 17 weeks premature. I only got out of bed to use the restroom and take the occasional shower…and I put on clothes and make up once a week to document my journey with a picture. ….. I was happy that week, knowing we only had a matter of days until we reached viability, when babies have a chance of survival. We never quite made it that far, and less than a week later our first daughter passed away. But the picture on the right is filled with so much hope, and that smile is a mirror image of how I feel today, more than 6 years later. ….. That picture on the left shows pure happiness. There is plenty of fear, but it’s masked by the hope and joy in each passing day. I’m 6 years older in this picture, and close to 40-years-old, but I don’t see the extra wrinkles or the exhaustion in being what’s considered “geriatric” when it comes to pregnancy. ….. At 32 weeks gestation, I’m just about the size of my last picture I snapped when I was pregnant with the triplets. Seeing these pictures side by side brings me to tears. It’s such a different experience this time around—I’m still working and not on bedrest, and you can still find me at the gym three days a week. ….. Two very different pregnancies, yet so many of the same emotions. Pregnancy after loss and premature birth is difficult. You face flashbacks of the heartache you once experienced and you face fear every day as hope this time will turn out better. I’ve already made it 10 weeks longer with this “rainbow baby”.
