happy weekend! I've been quite productive today both at home and in the lab (despite that bottle of rose last night ), and headed to the gym next. But before I do that, let's talk about dinosaurs! TITANOSAURS ➡️ are a subgroup of sauropod dinosaurs (think, "long necks" ) that lived during the Cretaceous Period (~145 to 66 million years ago), and - as their name implies - are thought to be the largest animals to have ever walked the Earth. Titanosaur fossils have been found all over the world, and especially in Argentina . About 40 species have been identified so far, the smallest being Neuquensaurus (23 feet long, weighed 11 tons) and the largest Patagotitan mayorum (122 feet long, weighed 77 tons ). As Patagotitan's name suggests, it was accidentally unearthed by a farmer in Patagonia, Argentina in 2014, beginning with its femur, which alone measures 8 feet in length. To put this in perspective, the largest titanosaurs were nearly as big as modern blue whales (the largest animals to have ever lived, at 100 feet long and 200 tons ), and bigger than 10 African elephants combined. Patagotitan weighed about as much as the Space Shuttle! Imagine seeing one of those walk through your backyard?! 3 weeks later, spring has come, and I'm finally back with a science post! Thank you, loyal followers, for not abandoning me - it's been a crazy past couple weeks. But, let's talk about ➡️ GENETIC DISORDERS. Genetic disorders arise from a mutation in a gene. Because it affects DNA directly, mutations can be passed to children from the mother and father. Therefore, genetic disorders come in two major flavors: 1️⃣ Dominant, meaning one copy of the gene is enough to cause the disease, and 2️⃣ Recessive, meaning you need two copies of the mutated gene to have the disease. An example of a dominant genetic disorder is Marfan syndrome, which is caused by a mutation in fibrillin-1 (FBN-1). FBN-1 forms the connective tissue in your body, and helps process growth factors. So, affected individuals are overgrown, tall and thin in build, with disproportionately long appendages (️). Due to its role in maintaining tissue integrity, Marfans can sometimes result in blindness, scoliosis, or cardiac failure, which is life threatening, but most individuals will live long lives (50-70 years). 1 in 10,000 people have this disease, and 25% of them arise from spontaneous mutations. One of the most well-understood recessive disorders is cystic fibrosis (CF), which arises from mutations in the gene CFTR. CFTR is a critical ion pump that allows your organs (lungs, liver, kidneys) to make and move fluid from your cells, such as mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids. Most CF patients experience chronic bacterial infections of the lungs, as bacteria thrive in the thicker mucus membranes - this is often the cause of death (life expectancy ~40 years). 1 in 25 people carry the mutation for this disease. There are no cures for genetic diseases (beyond the possibility of future gene editing tools), only short-term solutions. ‍⚕️ Have you thought about getting genetically tested to see if you carry genes for these diseases or others (ex.
