"Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale" from Attack of the Clones // Composed by John Williams ~ Happy 17th anniversary to "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones"! Today I decided to share one of my favorite pieces of the Star Wars saga, "Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale"! There is so much happening in this piece thematically speaking, but today I am talking about this specific excerpt! This excerpt appears as we bear witness to the full might of the Grand Army of the Republic, marking the beginning of the Clone Wars, and is characterized by none other than "The Imperial March". Even though this isn't one of the more abstract thematic moments, it perfectly exemplifies what is so brilliant about film music. When we look at this scene from a first-time watching perspective, we can infer "yeah, the clones look like storm troopers, they are probabaly gonna be involved in how we get to the Original Trilogy". But that's just it. It's an inference. A theory. Rather, it is the MUSIC that is definitively telling you that THIS IS THE RISE OF THE EMPIRE. The use of Vader's theme is a screaming declaration of the Republic and the Jedi Order marching to their doom. But notice too, this follows the idea of "The Imperial March" having dual meanings. This isn't a Vader moment. The upbeat, militaristic nature of the theme indicates that it is representing the Empire as a whole at this given time, and given that we are looking at an army of future Imperials, it makes sense. On a side note though, having TCW in your back pocket and having an understanding and appreciation of characters like Rex and Cody makes the use of "The Imperial March" a bit tragic in a way... BUT ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE, there is actually another theme that appears in this excerpt besides Vader's... can you guess which one it is? Hint: it's not from the Star Wars saga :)
