OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR OF NORTH SULAWESI: END THE DOG AND CAT MEAT TRADES Dear Governor @Olly.dondokambey The #DogMeatFreeIndonesia (#DMFI) coalition would like to bring to your attention the risks the trade in dogs and cats for human consumption throughout the province of North Sulawesi. We have already presented to you and the authorities of Manado, Tomohon, and Minahasa Regency evidence of the extreme cruelty and the illegality of the trades, from pet theft to illegal movement of animals across provincial borders, and the sale of rabies positive dogs. North Sulawesi Province continues to have some of the highest numbers of human deaths attributed to rabies in Indonesia – with a majority of those cases where there are a number of “traditional markets” trading in live dogs, cats and other animals. The link between the dog meat trade and the rabies transmission as well as the presence of rabies-positive dogs sourced and traded for human consumption has already been demonstrated by published data. The dog and cat meat trades are operating illegally and cause so much suffering and risks to public health & safety, yet it goes unchallenged by the authorities! The World Health Organization already stated that one of the causes of the spread of rabies in Indonesia is the dog meat trade. Yet no action is being taken to end this illegal trade, putting millions of people in danger! Back to earth with a big bump Picked this little thing up a few days ago after seeing her charging down the main road with severe mange and a hot water burn behind her ear Tried to catch her but she was weirdly aggressive for a small puppy, biting me twice and trying to go at me even when I wasn’t bothering her... I let her settle in a rubbish pile and then grabbed her to take her back to the hospital. We rarely see it buuuut something in the back of my mind was niggling that this could be rabies and everything else that was going on was a red herring/distraction from the real issue.. The puppy died overnight We also had reports of a potentially rabid dog a little further afield that had attacked some puppies and 6 people including our manager.. before also dying There is no post exposure protocol for animals unlike humans but, as vets, our primary responsibility in this situation is public health. There is no way to test dogs for rabies whilst they are still alive so difficult decisions must be made which is super traumatic for all involved. Rabies is fatal in 100% of cases if left untreated but luckily we have spent the last four years vaccinating a shit loads of dogs in this area so the impact should be minimal.. and we have carried out extensive education regarding dog bites so the majority of the public know what to do if the worst does happen So there is absolutely nothing to panic about; it’s just important to remain vigilant and if anyone has any concerns at all then call us/alert us on 041 225 9390.
