It’s hard to believe that it’s 26 years ago that Richard and I won the 1993 Scottish International Rally based that year in my hometown of Perth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Moving up to the Prodrive run Elonex Group A Legacy to defend the British title after two years of Colin McRae dominance was on paper always going to be tough, especially with Colin’s brother Alister as teammate and Malcolm Wilson in a Group A Escort Cosworth. Round one in Wales went well; fastest on the first stage and taking the win. Round two in Kielder would see a similar result, helped by Malcolm’s Ford having some mechanical problems, meaning we came to Scotland as Championship leaders. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was great to do a British Championship Rally based 20mins from home. For the recce and event I stayed at the team hotel in Perth but the night before the start the whole team came out to the farm for a BBQ and Clay Pigeon shoot which was great fun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The rally itself started with spectator stages at Knockhill Race Circuit and Scone Palace before heading west into Argyll the next morning. Malcolm always went well on the Scottish and we were up for the challenge so it was a mixture of relief and disappointment when he had a transmission problem on the first forest stage. We led with Alister in second and then he got a puncture near the start of the long Glenshellish stage losing a couple of minutes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The final day of the event was on the great stages north of Perth and included Craigvinean, Errochty and Drummond Hill. The pressure was off and it was a case of enjoying the stages and ensuring a Subaru 1-2 with us finishing 3mins ahead of Alister. Malcolm managed to get back to fifth with some pretty stunning stage times. Arriving back into Perth on roads local to home and shaking champagne on the ramp outside the City Hall was an incredible experience, although at the time the third maximum points score probably seemed more important and set up the final two rounds of the championship nicely.
