Excellent example of comminuted fractures of a cervical vertebra that are visible on radiographs and confirmed on CT. Given the orientation of these fractures on the CT relative to the spinal cord there is significant spinal cord associated compression. This however is difficult to appreciate on the available video of the CT study as I have the study windowed for bone and not the spinal cord region specifically. You can see how helpful CT is with regards to spinal trauma right!? See how the caudal part of C2 looked unremarkable on the radiograph but there is a fracture that extends caudally to involve the caudal right aspect of the C2 vertebra that you can see readily with C2? The marked narrowing/collapse of the C2-C3 intervertebral disc space narrowing is suggestive of probable concurrent traumatic intervertebral disc extrusion as well.

Great example of my favorite abdominal view saving the day! In general with the gastrointestinal tract wall thickening is often impossible to assess on survey radiographs (need a contrast study for example to evaluate wall thickening using radiographs and this is still not perfect compared with ultrasound…) unless there is a pretty significant mass. This is a very good example of a gastric mass in an older cat that is most consistent with neoplasia. Carcinoma,round cell neoplasia, etc. should be considered. This mass is likely responsible for the reported clinical signs. Non-neoplastic etiologies are considered unlikely. See how on the right lateral view you could not definitively tell if that was the stomach? And plop you put the patient in left lateral recumbency, gas with in the stomach rises up into the antrum letting you see the antrum because there’s gas in it relative to the gastric wall, and we have a diagnosis! Also… Do you see how useless the dorsoventral view is of the abdomen? It’s most often of little help for the abdomen (often very helpful for thorax/heart!) and for some reason it almost always gets mislabeled! I often get notes from the clinic saying, “we couldn’t get a VD because the patient was fractious (etc.).” I % get the difficulty getting that shot in some patients but the backstory unfortunately does not magically help me read the image any better . It’s almost not worth taking in many cases (especially in big dogs!). I have had clinicians call me up and one has actually yelled at me because I requested a left lateral view... “other radiologists have not recommended that in the past what’s wrong with you?” And… I have certainly had many a technician/nurse give me quite the stink eye when I request that extra left lateral… Can we all see why it’s helpful? ☺️❤️
