This Funky Friday features Rafflesia arnoldii, called Rafflesia or corpseflower for its characteristic ... aroma. This is the largest single flower in the world! “But I thought that was the titan arum?” you might ask. As I mentioned in the last Funky Friday, THAT corpseflower is technically not a single flower — its an inflorescence, which is a group of smaller flowers. And while the titan arum is certainly titanic, each flower isn’t very large on its own. In contrast, a single Rafflesia flower can be more than a meter across and weigh 10 kilograms (22 pounds)! This plant is more interesting than meets the eye, however. In fact, the majority of the plant is never visible. It’s a parasitic plant that takes the form of networks inside the roots of other plants that it steals nutrients from. The only part that ever emerges are the flowers (and their seeds). As such, it’s rare to see in its native Indonesia, and it has actually never been grown elsewhere. Another interesting fact is that this plant was the inspiration for the Pokemon Vileplume! We couldn’t believe our eyes when we found this astonishing blossom emerging from the rain forest floor in Borneo. It is the world’s largest flower, known as rafflesia, and it is three feet wide—the size of a tractor tire. Rafflesia is a mysterious parasitic plant that has no stems, leaves, or roots. It lives hidden underground inside a specific host vine and only expresses its presence when it swells up from the leaf litter and opens up as this otherworldly, electric-orange flower. Its petals are thick and rubbery, but they don’t last long in the tropical heat. Within hours, cracks appeared in the petals, and by the next morning, the bloom had collapsed. The second image shows another decaying bloom we found. Somewhere in its short life, flies pollinate the flowers, and tiny tree shrews disperse its seeds. Photos by @FransLanting. A Rafflesia pricei flower glows like a christmas decoration on the dark rainforest floor. This parasitic flowering plant is endemic to Borneo and named after botanist William Price, who discovered the species on Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu in the 1960s. The flowers smell like rotting flesh, hence its local names which translate to "corpse flower" or "meat flower".
