The Whakahoahoa Shawl is now live on Ravelry! (Link in my bio). This is a triangular shawl knit side-to-side, featuring a simple and easy to memorize lace diamond motif pattern that is perfect for that single skein of variegated yarn hiding in your stash. I’ll share more about the story of this precious design tomorrow because I want to talk about an experiment I’m running with this release: a “Pay What Works” model. • Over the past few days there have been a lot of great discussions about sustainability: as a maker or as a designer. How can I make more thoughtful purchases? How can I build a business that doesn’t require me to burn myself out and be able to pay myself adequately for the work I and others put into a single pattern release? • The answer: raise pattern prices. However I think this is a partial solution because another, just as important issue arises: accessibility and inclusion. • The price that Whakahoahoa is listed on Ravelry is $12. This much better reflects the time and energy that went into creating this design, and results in a much more thoughtful purchase. However, not everyone can afford a $12 pattern. Which is where the “Pay What Works” model comes in. I’ve been using this model for a while now, for my SWATCH Studio Circle offering and the Fibre Muse Initiation Workshop. And so far, it has worked well for me on those fronts. So it’s time to bring it to my patterns. • EDIT: made some changes!! Starting at $6, you can chose how much you wish to pay for the pattern. $6 is less than what I would originally charge for the pattern but still enough for me to be comfortable with. • And there are plenty of other ways to support indie designers such as myself: through ko-fi or Patreon. • I’ll be sharing the results of this experiment later on.
