Very informative tasting today with the lovely Cornelia @cantinatessari and @nicholaspearcewines Loved the fact that this winery only grows and makes wine from garganega. Started with only 1 hectare (now 11 hectares) and yes some of garganega vines are over 100 years old and pre-phylloxera! Tasted my first white recioto and their Avus Sur Lie which is a throwback to “col fondo” which is a 2nd fermentation in the bottle with no disgorgement...think pet-nat Soave! Pieropan is the oldest family-owned estate in Soave and was stablished in 1880 by doctor and amateur winemaker Leonildo Pieropan. Four generations marked its history. Today, The winery is run by Nino and Teresita Pieropan and their sons, Dario and Andrea. One fact I really like about this winery is that each member of the family has a barrel with its own name and year of birth. Also, the size, type of oak and level of toastiness is as unique as the personality of each member of the family, giving a unique touch to the Recioto di Soave that rests in the barrels! Isn't it amazing?
