Dear Benny Boy, Today you’re 17. I remember our beginning, in Toronto, when I’d pass you every morning on my way to work, as you looked out the window, of your lonely home. You melted my heart. I remember when your humans asked Sonny to be your walker, because you were too much to handle. I remember when you ripped through Sonny’s hand when he became the only one to ever show leadership with you. I also remember, how quickly soon after, you looked to him for guidance. I remember how you became like that one kid who always has to get themselves into mischief. I remember when those walks turned into late nights in our condo, in the company of our then pack of two, Baby and Bunny. I remember that conversation when your humans said they no longer wanted you, and we promised to give you a beautiful life, as we made plans to flee the city for this sweet country air. I remember the first few months, when you were officially ours, I tried to get closer to you, but you just weren’t the cuddly dog I’d hoped for. I remember as the months went by, we were settling into our new home, and you were settling into your role as one of the lead pack members. I remember, then, how quickly you became attached to me, and assumed the role as my Benny Boy. My heart melted. You still weren’t cuddly. You squirmed and you jumped, just wanting to be free. I think we share that trait. And now, I know that as you’re aging, life has slowed down. You’re no longer the spitfire Jack you were a short time ago. I carry you up and down the stairs, and hold your bum while you poop. I’m okay with that. There were moments this year when I thought you were ready to leave, but you just had a bad couple of weeks. I get it. Sure, you may not be the Benny you were then, but the Benny I get to enjoy now... he’s a cuddle monster who can’t sleep further than a milimeter from my face. My heart melts into million little pieces, every time. Thank you for finally sharing that with this mamma who is so grateful for every single extra moment that I get with you.
