Here’s a little behind the scenes resin demolding. Technically this is a liquid plastic, made by @smoothon (smooth-cast 310). It’s different than epoxy resin but is similar in nature. I wanted to show you some raw pieces right out of the mold. I feel like sometimes people assume casting pieces is easy, quick and should be priced considerably lower than say a hand sculpted piece. So I thought I should explain some things about casting pieces. Molding and Casting is hard. It’s also not a cheap practice by any means, and it can be time consuming and tedious. You will mess up and you will waste product, ruin molds, loose half your sanity. Especially when you sculpt all your pieces to be molded by hand, then make your own molds and then cast in them. Resin work is challenging and takes skill wether you make your own molds or buy them. It also requires patience, skill and a lot of mistakes to get good casts. You can’t just pop something out of a mold and sell it. There has to be a lot of finishing work done to casts (filling holes, repairs, sanding, priming, painting, removing flashing, adding hand sculpted pieces onto a molded piece, etc.). It requires special safety protocols and work spaces to do it safely. Some processes require more work than others but it’s not a *pop* and done process. Also a cost to consider is the mold itself, that takes time and money in itself and will need to be to remade after a certain amount of casts are pulled from it. I personally got into casting to save my customers money and speed up my work time. It also helps me keep my items a consistent size and shape. Some amazing effects you can only get through resin casting. Could I sculpt all these pieces by hand? Yes. But it would cost double or triple what I charge now. And each casted piece is still hand made, inspected, finished, painted by me. To me a resin item or molded piece is just as lovely and special as a hand sculpted item. I’m really happy I decided to start molding and casting, it’s challenging but the results are so worth it! Believe me if I can do it, ANYONE can! ❤️
