✨‼️A BEAUTIFUL STORY OF PEACE, HEALING AND RECONCILIATION ‼️✨ This is my beautiful little niece. This is the beautiful little boy who gave her this swollen (and soon to be black) eye TODAY. Rather than sending him to an institution (and after comforting her father-my Bruddah @thelifeof_jallen who was in protective mode) I was able to conduct a gathering with him, his family, my mother and niece to begin soothing what was at the base of his frustrations. I was able to be present with his tears as his grandmother shared the root of some of his issues. I was able to share words of patience and light with his family AND THEY RECEIVED THEM. If we want to #heal our communities, if we want #RestorativeJustice at the center of our conflicting issues rather than white supremacist practices of incarceration that wish to destroy the future of our youth ‼️WE MUST BEGIN WITH OURSELVES AND THE HEALING OF OUR CHILDREN. ‼️We will be hanging out together soon and spending time to cultivate the beauty of what happened today. No one will be visiting him in an institution‼️ THIS is how we BUILD. THIS is how we become the CHANGE we wish to see. THIS is how we perpetuate PEACE amongst our people rather than hate and humiliation. In 1991, Raymond Santana published this poem in our prison newsletter, Spofford Voices, protesting his incarceration and proclaiming his innocence. Four of the "Central Park Five" were initially sent to the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center, where they participated in a writing workshop run by YouthComm. We're glad that #WhenTheySeeUs is getting more people talking about this moment in history, and how we urgently need to fix this system that continues to wreak havoc on the lives of young people of color. .
