Typing through tears. The story it’s taken me a year to tell. — Depression lies. Pain lies. Fear lies. Shame lies. Trauma lies. — The truth is out there. No matter how dark the sky, how deep the black hole, the truth is still there. — Sometimes the truth... the inspiration... is delivered by a spirit with four legs, fur, and a feisty will to live. — I saved his life, long ago, and this year, he saved mine. — July 3 will be the anniversary of the worst pain I have ever known, and the fiercest challenge of my life. I have not been able to talk about how far I fell, until now... until I was certain I had emerged... that the worst was behind me. — I am a master of downplaying trauma. And I’ve lived long enough to go through some dark times. I was above the Tokyo subway during the horrific Sarin gas attack, just minutes from being *in* it. I was in the Northridge earthquake, and the most terrifying experience of the LA riots, 7 hours trapped on the freeway watching my city burn, helpless to get to my daughter’s school, and with all phone and emergency services overloaded and down. I lost my mother to cancer as a child. I’ve had operations and operations, and an entire life with epilepsy. But through all of it, I found gratitude for how lucky I was. But not this time. — I never imagined a simple minor hand surgery would turn deadly. I was in a strange city, alone, for five days. The first night, I had pushed my husband to get back on the ferry with a smile saying, “I’ll feel better knowing the animals are all safe. And hey, I’ll be out tomorrow!” — But that’s not what happened. I had nobody to advocate for me, and could not speak. I was incoherent by the second day. My phone lost its charge, but by then I could not have picked it up let alone push buttons. For five days I screamed, alone. For five days I came in and out of consciousness just long enough to think of NOTHING except how to end it. How to get myself to the window. I obsessed over whether the window would open. Whether I could break it. — I would like to say that my strength of will got me through. But that would be a lie. I am still here for only one reason: I could not move. — But last night I danced ❤️

My beautiful Frodo. How often I’ve been asked why I haven’t put him down yet/what I plan to do with him. Quite simply, I plan to give him the best bloody life possible. Yes he’s broken his leg and yes he’s got a lopsided way of getting around - his leg has set awkwardly but he’s adapted beautifully. A couple days ago @wherecarinagoes put up a post about a rescued pony with a prosthetic leg. The amount of negativity that came from it was honestly quite alarming. I’m going to use Carina’s words here to best describe how I feel about this. Context: this is her response to the unnecessary hate she got for supporting the idea of prosthetic legs for equines. According to many, it’s inhumane to prolong their suffering and they should be put down instead. That once mobility is compromised there’s no quality of life, thus no reason to live. Right. “...why shouldn’t we try to save a life if there is a slightest chance that it’ll work? Does life mean so little to you, that as soon as it gets tricky, you’d rather end it than fight for it? ... The mobility of the horse might be different - and I say “different“, not “lost“, because horses adapt to change - that’s how nature works.” Now for those of you who have met Frodo, you’ll know he is the most spirited pony in the world - full of life. So to those who blindly hate: Do you honestly expect me to put down my perfectly healthy horse because of a leg injury that doesn’t slow him down in the least? Please. If you think I’m prolonging his suffering/that it’s my responsibility to make a call on his behalf to end his life, you’re the reason why progress is slow. If you think I’m being selfish by keeping him alive and that I’m blinded by my own emotions, you’re an idiot. For all the rest of you who have supported me through Frodo and Achilles (❤️), you’ve learned with me how different each case can be. And how they need to be looked at separately and individually. At the end of the day it’s simple, every single animal deserves a chance and someone to fight for them. If there’s hope, and if we can take some of their burden upon ourselves to give our animals a life they deserve, I’m all for it.

When I was looking for Smokey’s video for my last post, I came across this video that I made a couple of years ago too.
