On March 5th 2019, Hwang Cheol (Teach North Korean Refugees Global Education Center - TNKR's Fellow in Human Dignity) spoke at an EU conference about the human rights situation in North Korea. The conference took place at the European Parliament in Brussels and was hosted by MEP László TŐKÉS, EPP.
In his speech, Hwang passionately called on the EU members to join him in demanding his father's repatriation, so that he can bring his father home while he is still alive.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the KAL hijacking, we intend to urge the EU and UN member states to strongly call on the North Korean authorities to provide information on the 11 KAL abductees and return them to their families.
We ask for your continued support as we engage in our 10-day advocacy.

Dear friends,
Yesterday was my 35th birthday, and I spent most of it assisting Mr. Hwang Cheol with two interviews for the foreign media (Spain and UK). As always, the goal was to help bring international attention to the fact that his father was abducted by North Korea on 11 December 1969, and that he has been held there against his will for almost half a century. Mr. Hwang's father was 32 at the time of his abduction. Today, he would be 80.
Mr. Hwang remains determined as ever to break the silence surrounding his father's abduction. But it comes at a cost; to secure the time he needs for his campaign, Mr. Hwang works as a day laborer, taking whatever jobs that are available each day to help support his family. The pay is small, but he has succeeded in both supporting his family of 5 (his aging mother, his wife, and his 3 daughters) and keeping his father's story alive in a country that has all but forgotten about the 1969 Korean Air hijacking incident.
I am creating this fundraiser to help Mr. Hwang defray some of his costs. Will you help by giving to this fundraiser? Any amount will be deeply appreciated, supporting Mr. Hwang's ongoing efforts to bring his father home.
PS: This is a matching grant; I will match up to 400,000 won (approximately $380). Thank you, and God bless.
Sincerely,
Young-Min Kwon
