Got myself a new #cassetteplayer last week -- a Sony TC-WE305 from the mid-90s. It's not a top-of-the-line item by any means, but since it's a new old stock, everything is in perfect working condition. I've been listening to my old tapes again, and one of the albums I've 'rediscovered' is this, #Mansun's #LittleKix /// My impression of the album when I first bought it nineteen years ago(!) wasn't exactly negative, but after the gleeful excess and experimentalism of Six, Little Kix' power ballads and adult contemporary tunes did sound a bit unnerving. From being a peer of Radiohead, The Verve and Blur, Mansun now sounded like they'd be more at home filed next to Genesis, Sting and Foreigner. (My sister even went as far as calling "Forgive Me" the best boyband tune a boyband never performed ) /// Listened to again today -- without considering what has came before and what the musical landscape looked like at the time of release -- Little Kix came across as a thoroughly competent pop album. "A New Beginning" is a captivating opening tune; "I Can Only Disappoint U" remains one of my favorite Mansun singles; "Fool" is still a great pop song -- even if it was originally written as a piss-take on the music industry; and ballads like "Forgive Me" and "Until The Next Life" sound like they'd make great lighter-in-the-air stadium moments. Sunday night with Eno /// A couple of months ago I came upon a NM OG copy of My Life In The Bush of Ghosts while browsing the crates of Blok M Square -- my record collection's first Eno -- and found myself enjoying it immensely. Fast forward to a few days before Eid, and I stumbled on this UK Polydor copy of #AnotherGreenWorld. The cover's quite banged up, but the record is thankfully still pristine. And whaddya know, I found myself enjoying this one even more. The recording strategies might be oblique, but the results are straight ahead fantastic: full of sublime textures and superb performances. I remember downloading "Moon In June" during Limewire's heyday in the early noughties -- the song became my entry point to the #SoftMachine. Took me a while, but get hooked I did. I bought a cd copy of Third not long after, but was quite surprised to find a different version of "Moon In June" in it. There are no silly-yet-memorable meta-lyrics, for one. (Ex: 'I can still remember / The last time we played on Top Gear / And though each little song / Was less than 3 minutes long / Mike squeezed a solo in somehow' .) The sound, too, seems a bit more muddled. Only later did I found out that the version I downloaded was, in fact, a live version, recorded for #JohnPeel's Top Gear programme at the BBC, on June 21st, 1969 /// Cut to: sixteen years later. Cue: #TripleEcho. Procuring this fantastically epic #boxset meant that I'm finally able to listen to the BBC version of "Moon In June" on glorious vinyl. 'Fantastic' and 'epic' are, indeed, the key words here. Across three records, the compilation offer quite a comprehensive overview of the band's first ten years -- record one covers the #psychpop years; record two is all about Third, and, aside from "Moon In June", it also includes an awesome live version of "Slightly All The Time", one of my, ahem, all-time favorite SM track, recorded during the same session; record three covers the post-#RobertWyatt #jazzfusion years. Another bonus is the booklet, which also include a history of #TheCanterburyScene, complete with a #rockfamilytree by the legendary #PeteFrame, and photo captions that show the band's other, funnier side. The fact that it shares a title with one of my favorite indie pop band's sophomore effort -- I'm looking at you, Birdie -- is the icing on the cake /// I've been listening to this boxset throughout my Eid holidays -- and the enjoyment continues today . Finally completed my #AquiViviaYo-era #LeMans collection! This might not be their best album -- that title, for me, goes to their sophomore effort, #Entresemana -- but Aqui... will always have a special place in my heart. You see, the very first Le Mans song that I heard of, the supremely breezy and catchy "La Balada de la Primavera" -- which I discovered via that classic 3-disc March Records comp, Moshi Moshi -- was originally released as the b-side to "Mi Novela Autobiografica", the lead single from this LP. Later I found out that the band intended Aqui... as their farewell album, and you can read that intention if you put all the three records they released during this period -- the album itself, the aforementioned "Mi Novela..." and second single "Yin Yang" -- side by side. (I know, I know, there IS a 7 inch version of "Mi Novela...", but since it's not part of the statement, I didn't include it here .) Anyways, I finally got the last piece of the puzzle -- the "Yin Yang" single on 12" -- about a week ago, and here we are.
