The first time I watched Dumbo as a little girl, I cried my eyes out for days. Looking to my mama to explain to me how anybody could ever separate a loving mama elephant from her beloved new baby. Asking her over and over again why someone would put ‘handcuffs’ on any animal. Today, as I reflect on these memories, as well as my work as an advocate and activist, I realize just how deep my desire to protect animals runs. From the very beginning, it has been such a huge part of who I am. It IS who I am - not just what I do. It’s in my DNA. It is my purpose. . . . #Repost @donnamaria1961 This scene is from the original Dumbo movie and in a few more days a new version will be out in theatres. Peta wrote to the director some time ago asking they change the ending and let the animals live their lives in a sanctuary. We have made too much progress for this movie to be promoting performing animals. They’re not rock stars who signed up for a life of confinement and entertainment traveling from city to city by trains and trucks. That’s absolutely no life for any animal. I keep checking for spoilers on the new version of Dumbo and so far I can’t find anything about how the movie ends. That message is very important. We have no right to force this existence on any animal. Peta also thanked the director for using CGI elephants in this movie. Dumbo to me was one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen and everyone was rooting for the baby to be reunited with its mother. And this time we’re not only rooting for Dumbo and Mother to remain together, but that they escape the circus life too. The circus is for human performers who have given their consent.
