Do you drink Rioja Gran Reserva winesTell me what you like... Earlier this week, I tasted @lariojaaltasa’s new Gran Reserva label the 2012 Viña Arana. Arriving in the UK end of May with @armitwines £35 The Rioja Gran Reserva labelling term requires a wine to be aged for a minimum of 5 years before release (min. of 2 years in oak & a min. of 2 years in bottle). It’s made by producers only in the best years when they believe the wine will be of superb quality with long ageing potential The Viña Arana 2012 has been aged for 3 years in American oak barrels& 4.5 years in the bottle. Tasting it side by side Rioja Alta’s other Gran Reservasit has both elements of a traditional Gran Reserva AND some fresher, fruitier elements. Notes of baked fruit & hints of sweet mince pieswith a luscious texture & a smooth finish of smokeyleathery notes. For me, the typical more savoury quality of a Gran Reserva is exchanged here for a more bright fruit-forward character with layers of fresher strawberry& raspberry notes on the palate - which really lifts ✨the wine. As discussedin our tasting, this wine is perfect for getting younger/new drinkers into Gran Reserva wines as it’s a more approachable take on this style I love it! . . . A few more techy bits for those interested!......The Viña Arana is a blend of 95% Tempranillo & 5% Graciano - under the previous Reserva label the blend had 5% Mazuelo (aka Carignan) instead. The change in the blend to include the prized Graciano grape with its intense colour, high acid & tannins is ideal to assist with ageing a Gran Reserva wine - as these elements provide the structure to help the wine age ~ #riojaalta #lariojaalta #riojawine #rioja #granreserva
