THE DISASTROUS GOVERNMENT OF TSARINA ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA: The departure of Nicholas of Petrograd because of World War I and the his removal from the civil government left a void that the Tsarina Alexandra felt obliged to fill. Leaving the sickbed, she decided to give Russia something that she visibly considered a real autocracy lesson. She didn’t understand anything about how to govern a country. In only four days after Nicholas's departure, she started firing ministers with a huge speed. The entire war effort of the government was transformed into a personal struggle between those whom she considered favorable and those that she considered unfavorable to the entrance of Russia in the war. The ministers who had asked the tsar not to take command of the army were systematically dismissed by the Tsarina. Anyone who suggested that it might be wise to work with the Duma was also fired. Anyone she did not like or who in her opinion opposed it or criticized Rasputin also was dismissed. Her letters to Nicholas were full of references to "our friend" (Rasputin) and of demands for removal from ministers. "How I wish I could hang Rodzianko (the Duma president), a terrible and rather insolent man," she wrote in the letter to Nicholas. She exhorted her husband to be assertive and autocratic. Alexandra dispensed ministers with enormous speed. She wanted that the ministers to have hatred of the Duma and respect for Rasputin. Her favorite minister was Alexander Protopopov, a former representative in the Duma who prospered because of Rasputin and was considered mentally unstable or insane. #tsarina #tsarinaalexandra #tsarinaalexandrafeodorovna #russianmonarchy #russianempire #ww1 #20century #oldhistory #russianhistory #theromanovfamily #romanovimperialfamily #theromanovs #alexandrafeodorovna #romanovdynasty #empressofrussia #empress #ofrussia

THE NECKLACE OF EMERALDS OF THE GRAND DUCHESS XENIA ALEXANDROVNA: The Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, sister of the Tsar Nicholas II, had an impressive collection of jewelry and one of the few opportunities that she had of wear her emeralds, diamonds, sapphires and rubies was at the 1903 costume ball at the Winter Palace, whose theme was the history of seventeenth-century Russia, to celebrate the 290th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The costume of the "boyarina" with the traditional russian female headdress "kokoshnik" were strewn with sparkling gems, among which was the necklace of large emeralds lying on the shoulders of the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna stands out. This necklace was a gift from Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna for their daughter's wedding in 1894, made in the late 19th century by Nichols Ewing with emeralds purchased by the Emperor and the Empress. After the Russian revolution, this emeralds necklace and other jewels stayed hidden in the Moscow mansion of the son-in-law of the Grand Duchess. Until 1925, Xenia Alexandrovna and the family of Prince Yussupov still had the hope to return to Russia to retrieve their jewels, but when the museum workers, servants of the Yussupov mansion, accidentally discovered the hiding place of all these jewels, that hope disappeared. The jewels, including Xenia's emeralds necklace that was in his son-in-law's mansion, were dismantled and sold. #diamonds #kokoshnik #royaldiamonds #jewels #royaljewels #royaljewel #jewelry #royalgems #romanov_dynasty #romanovdynasty #romanovimperialfamily #grandduchess #grandduchessxenia #jewelrydesign #esmeraldas #beautifulemerald #imperialrussia #romanov #preciousstones #weddinggifts #emeraldnecklace #romanovjewels #luxuryjewels #xeniaalexandrovna #royalball

THE BIRTH OF GRAND DUCHESS MARIA NIKOLAEVNA ROMANOVA: 120 years ago, on June 26, 1899, the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna Romanova was born in Peterhof, St. Petersburg, third daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and of his wife, the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. When Maria was born, her father wrote in his diary: "A happy day: the Lord sent us a third daughter - Mary - who was safely born at 12:10am. Alix barely slept during the night and in the morning the pain increased, but thank to God, it was all over quickly. My dear wife felt good all day and she herself fed the baby ... the afternoon was wonderful”. #grandduchessmaria #mariaromanov #marianikolaevna #thirddaughter #royaldaughter #grandduchessmarianikolaevna #grandduchess #otma #theromanovfamily #romanovfamily #romanovimperialfamily #mariaromanova #oldrussia #ofrussia #imperialfamily #imperialrussia

PRINCE PHILLIP AND HIS KINSHIP WITH THE ROMANOVS: Phillip of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, has a very close kinship with the Romanovs. These relationships are so close that when the remains of the last imperial family were discovered in the early 1990s, the Prince Phillip was one of the people who provided blood samples to determine the DNA profile of the imperial family. Phillip is the youngest son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and of Princess Alice of Battenberg. His father was the son of King George I of Greece and of Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. His father's eldest sister, the Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, married in 1889 with the Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich Romanov (uncle of Tsar Nicholas II). This makes Philip the direct cousin of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and of Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, both children of Grand Duke Paul and of Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark. Philip is also the grand-nephew of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and of Tsarina Alexandra (wife of Tsar Nicholas II), for his maternal grandmother, Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, was the eldest sister of Elizabeth and of Alexandra. The children of Tsar Nicholas II and of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna were his second cousins. Phillip had often gone on vacation with another important person linked to the Romanov family: the Grand Duke Ernest Louis de Hesse-Darmstadt, brother of Grand Duchess Elizabeth and of Tsarina Alexandra. One of Phillip's sisters, the Princess Cecilia, married with the eldest son of Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, the Prince George Donatus. #princephillip #dukeofedinburgh #relatives #theromanovfamily #romanovimperialfamily #romanovs #theromanovs #romanov #britishroyalty #houseofromanov #alexandrafeodorovna #elizabethfeodorovna #romanovchildren #houseofhesse #hessedarmstadt #granddukeernstlouisofhesse #granddukedmitripavlovich #romanovfamily

THE DISEASE OF TSAREVICH ALEXEI, HEIR TO THE RUSSIAN THRONE: THE HEMOPHILIA: The photo in the upper left corner of the post shows a formal portrait of Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich of Russia playing with his mother, the Empress Alexandra’s pearl necklace, 1913. To his parents' dismay, the son who the Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra wanted so much, Alexei, was born with hemophilia, an incurable bleeding disease. Having known how the disease claimed the lives of her elder brother Friedrich and her uncle Leopold, Alexandra suffered a great deal of guilt for passing down the disease to Alexei and eventually suffered what many termed as a breakdown due to the worry for her son's health. Having to live with the knowledge that she had given him the bleeding disease, Alexandra was obsessed with protecting her son; she kept a close eye on him at all times and consulted several mystics who claimed to be able to heal him during his nearly fatal attacks. Because of that, the tsarina Alexandra spoiled her only son and let him have his way. In 1912, Alexandra finally revealed the truth about Alexei's illness, in confidence, to her mother-in-law and Nicholas's sisters, but the knowledge soon reached a more limited circle of courtiers and of relatives. The revelation backfired on Alexandra, since she was now blamed for Alexei's frail health and, because it had first appeared among Queen Victoria's children. Her condition was known to some as "the English disease," adding to the element of foreignness that clung to Alexandra. This was one of the main facts that led the Tsarina to grow old so early. #tsarevich #tsarevichalexei #alexeiromanov #alexeinikolaevich #royalheir #royalson #royalchild #romanovimperialfamily #theromanovfamily #alexandrafeodorovna #tsarinaalexandra #tsarina #romanovfamily #romanov #lovingmother #imperialrussia #alexeinikolaevichromanov

THE MURDER OF TSARINA ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA WOULD BE THE SALVATION OF RUSSIA: During the period when the Tsarina was in office (while Nicholas II was in battle, during the First World War), the only contacts that she had within the Romanov family were with Nicholas's brothers and a small number of other relatives who were close to the family: the Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich (Sandro) and his wife, the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (sister of Tsar Nicholas II), the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (also sister of Tsar), the Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, cousin of Tsar, and the his family and the Grand Duke George Mikhailovich, married with the princess Maria of Greece. Alexandra encouraged very Nicholas, her husband, giving her lots of advice. She was a fervent advocate of the "divine right of the monarchs" and believed that the participation of the people in government was unnecessary. During World War I, with the citizens annoyed with the interim government of Tsarina, almost all the complaints were addressed to her, for example, because she was born German, because of her poor ideals, her partiality, her devotion to Rasputin and her favoritism to the incompetent Minister Protopopov. According to the daughter of the British ambassador in Russia, Meriel Buchanan, the Tsarina's murder was commented on in the salons of the aristocracy as the only salvation of the Russian empire. THE DOWAGER EMPRESS MARIA FEODOROVNA WANTED TO BE WITH NICHOLAS IN EXILE: In 1917, the Kiev newspapers began to publish that "The Romanov dynasty was to be destroyed." The members of the imperial family were only the "Romanovs, enemies of the revolution and the Russian people." The Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich (Sandro) said: "My mother-in-law, the dowager Empress, is very saddened by the uncertainty surrounding her Nicholas's fate." Sandro tried in vain to explain to the Empress about the ruthless course of the revolution. Maria Feodorovna says: “my unlucky Nicky may have made some mistakes, but to say that he is the enemy of his people? Never, never...” Sandro said: “the fascinating Princess Dagmar of Denmark of fifty years ago sacrificed her youth, her beauty and her happiness to the service of Russia. She saw her kind-hearted son-in-law, the tsar Alexander II, be taken to the palace with her limbs torn because of a terrorist bomb. She saw her husband die prematurely and, now, the fate has brought her here, hundreds of miles the distance of his two children (Nicholas and Michael), to this provincial city where the people wanted to speak Ukrainian”. Maria could hardly believe that Nicky had abdicated of the throne. Ex-subordinates of Sandro begged for them to leave Kiev while there was still the permission of the government, to go to the Crimea. Sandro asked his sister-in-law, the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, to convince her mother, Maria Feodorovna, to go south, but never that the dowager empress would be further from Nicky. Olga received a "no" immediately. Maria argued: "Why can’t I stay with Nicky and his family there in Tobolsk, in exile? His wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, is too young to endure all the suffering alone”. But they went to the Crimea and carried Maria Feodorovna by force to the station. The empress resisted to the last moment, declaring herself ready to be arrested and put into exile along with her son Nicholas. She wanted to see Nicholas, but she never saw him again. #mariafeodorovna #granddukealexandermikhailovich #olgaromanova #romanovimperialfamily #romanovfamily #tobolsk #1917 #oldrussia

PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT. HOUSE ARREST AND SUBSEQUENT EXILE IN TOBOLSK OF THE IMPERIAL FAMILY. OCTOBER REVOLUTION OF 1917: The Russian Provisional Government, under the command of Alexander Kerensky, the second and last prime minister of the Russian Provisional Government, was formed in Petrograd in 1917 after the February Revolution and the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. Two rival institutions, the Duma and the Petrograd Soviet, competed for power. The Provisional Government would rule until the Russian Constituent Assembly subsequently determines the form of government of Russia. The real strenght of the new government was Alexandre Kerenky. He was a member of the Petrograd Soviet and also of the Duma, and, because of this, both groups trusted him. Kerensky was responsible for the protection of the imperial family who was under house arrest in the Alexander palace, protecting all of them from radical opponents like the Bolsheviks. He even became friends with the imperial family, but In August 1917, Kerensky transferred Nicholas and his family to Tobolsk in the Ural Mountains, as the security of the Romanov family was threatened, and at the same time, the power of Kerensky also was threatened, because the power of the Petrograd Soviet increased. Nicholas' brother Duke Michael helped Kerensky leave Russia after the Revolution of October 1917, when the Bolsheviks seized power, led by Vladimir Lenin, a communist revolutionary. #romanovfamily #imperialfamily #romanovimperialfamily #romanov #alexanderkerensky #russianrevolution #russianrevolution1917 #alexanderpalace #tsarnicholasii #tobolsk #oldrussia #oldhistory #romanovdynasty #provisionalgovernment #russianmonarchy
