Baron and Baroness Élie de Rothschild, 11 rue Masseran, Paris, Grand Salon, THREE PHOTOS: The first photo, from the recent Rothschild catalog by @christies , taken by @moorederry in the 1970’s, shows one end of the grand salon of Liliane and Élie de Rothschild’s Hôtel Masseran, where they lived from the late 1950’s until 1978. According to her obituary in The Telegraph: “When, in the late 1950s, she and her husband moved into 11 rue Masseran, a Paris hotel built for Prince Masserano by Brongniart in 1785, Liliane de Rothschild decorated its interiors with a most effective mixture of Rothschild portraits and objets d'art, French furniture by the greatest 18th-century cabinetmakers, Old Master paintings and the 20th-century works of art that she and Baron Elie collected.” According to the book, Great Private Collections, the chaise longue in the foreground is “...of a type known as une gondole, said to have been made for Marie Antoinette.” (be sure to zoom in to look at how it is upholstered – it’s very interesting) In front of the pilasters are a pair of tortoiseshell-inlay cabinets which are 94” high, giving us an idea of the tremendous ceiling height. The spectacular panels in between the pilasters are actually curtains. The second photo is a Serebriakoff watercolor of the rest of the grand salon. A few years ago I wrote a book about Boucheron : the Secret Archives. Since then, I am always thrilled to see a piece which I mention in my Book, and which has disappeared for ages, coming back. The most famous example of that is the Grevile emerald tiara lost for more than 70 years. It came back on the head of princess Eugenie of York on her wedding day in October 2018. It had been kept all that time in one of Queen Elizabeth’s safe. The latest one of those Boucheron rebirth is that pearl and diamond tiara. It dates from 1913, and was sold that very year to baron Edmond de Rothschild for his future daughter in law, miss Dorothy Pinto. The archives show that it was sold as a necklace for 45 000 francs of the time with an armature of diamonds ( to wear it as a tiara) for 3 000 francs. Dorothy Pinto anc her husband James de Rothschild were at one point the owners of the fabulous Rothschild estate of Waddesdon in England. Theiy had no children and their nephews still keep today the Rothschild tradition of sponsoring the arts. Lord Rothschild has saved Spencer house in London and he is presiding over a foundation who participates in the running and the upkeep of Waddesdon. Lord Rothschild has announced that this autumn a new wing of Waddesdon will open to visitors. It is called the Treasure and will present 300 precious objects of the Rothschild collection. Giraffes like this reticulated giraffe and Rothschild giraffe @rolling_hills_zoo are the world's tallest mammals, thanks to their towering legs and long necks. While the two species look very similar, you can tell them apart thanks to differences in their coat, with the reticulated giraffe sporting finer white lines in its pattern. Typically, these beautiful animals roam the open grasslands across Africa in small groups of about half a dozen. Giraffes use their height to good advantage and browse on leaves and buds in treetops that few other animals can reach, relying on their 21-inch long tongue to help successfully secure each meal. With such a large home range, giraffes face a number of threats including hunting, habitat loss, drought, and armed conflict in unstable regions.
