Royal Wedding 2011: William gave Kate his mother's engagement ring given to Diana by Prince Charles upon their engagement in February 1981. The engagement ring consisted of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire set in 18-karat white gold. It was created by then-crown jeweller Garrard. The ring is said to bear a resemblance to Queen Victoria's sapphire-and-diamond wedding brooch, which was chosen for her by Prince Albert. William’s mother, Lady Diana Spencer, originally chose the ring herself. Prince Charles did not propose with it in hand, but instead had a selection of rings shown to her. At the time, Diana’s choice caused a scandal. Some people criticised her for not having one custom made. Some newspapers called it a “commoner’s ring”. Diana continued to wear the ring even after her divorce from Prince Charles. When William and Kate announced their engagement, sales of sapphire engagement rings went through the roof once again, with jewellers all over the world frantically buying hoards of the blue gems to satisfy the public’s demand. In 1981, the ring cost £28,000. It’s now valued at approximately £300,000. After Diana's death, Princes William and Harry selected mementos from their mother's possessions. Harry chose the engagement ring, while William selected Diana's £19,000 yellow gold Cartier Tank Francaise watch. They eventually exchanged mementoes because Harry thought of Kate as a sister and both princes wanted her to have their mother’s ring. William later said that giving the ring to his fiancée was a "way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement." Kate eventually had the ring resized because she had lost weight prior to the wedding.
