2:50:36 — not quite what I set out to do today, but damn, I’m proud I actually finished this one, AND that I ran this fast considering this was a big time pain train from about mile 11 onward...the last 15 miles of a marathon is a lonnnng way to go if you’re not feeling too hot. “It’s ok to struggle. It’s not okay to give up.” — a sign posted along the race, quote from Gabe Grunewald. Not gonna lie, I teared up a little bit when I saw that sign, which seemed to be speaking right to me today. Right then and there, I decided that even if my time goal was not possible, I was going to hang in there and NOT GIVE UP. I was technically on pace for sub-2:45 through the half, but I really didn’t feel that great in any of the first half. It felt like I was working too much for each mile—not that it was even that fast...it just didn’t feel great. I was holding out hope that things would turn around; they really didn’t, but I put my nose to the grindstone and pretty much grit got me to the end of this one! That, and seeing Phillip along the course! It was really sunny, and I’ve decided I’m not sure I like this course ...just a little too much of those long slight downhills for my taste (my legs?). Proud that I kept going, and I somehow moved up through a ton of people in the last 10k. This was a rough week for me as we lost a family friend who is really more our family very suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday: my mantra over the last 10k became “Run for Greg” which I just repeated over and over. Pretty sure Greg kept me going there and helped me hang tough and pass everybody. Best things today: I made it to the end! 2:50 is pretty fast for feeling rough! My best friend Louise was there at the end! She’s been in North Dakota and was just passing through, decided to watch the race, and saw me!!! Shoutout to Laura who I met after the race and who does my yoga videos 3x/week and likes my voice! That made me so happy. Phillip is actually the best husband AND course support ever ever. #RunnersLoveYoga #doyogarunfaster #gmas19

These pictures were taken recently (see my feed), only a couple days apart. The one on the left I dont look nearly as relaxed, it was taken after working around people, on a four day stretch and working multiple shifts. Absolutely no alone time. . The one on the right, I'd been off work for a few days, this was day 3 of 3 days off. I'd had plenty of #naturetherapy and alone time to recharge. Much more relaxed! . I've had 'friends' tell me I'm "hard to hangout with". I'd always wander off by myself. I just assumed I was more of an #introvert than them. Which I'm sure is partly true, but I came across an article not long ago in #womenshealth that helped me understand the 'why' a bit better. Thought some of you might relate. . "- Do loud noises, smells, light, or scratchy fabrics drive you crazy? - Do you need loads of alone time to reset? - Do arguments or yelling make you feel sick? - Do you absorb others' feelings to the point that you vent about their problems instead of your own? - Do you prefer to hang out in small groups over big ones?" . "If you answer yes to most of these, you may have an excess of empathy." "The term 'empathy' is used to describe a wide range of experiences. Emotion researchers generally define empathy as the ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling." You can see how this might be exhausting! . I answered yes to all of these. I don't think it's a character flaw. It's just part of who I am. My brain works a little different than most peoples. I've come to terms. . So if this sounds like you too, know that you aren't alone, though you might prefer to be! . 80 minute #run (9? 10? miles) yesterday before work. 80 minutes on the #ultramarathontraining plan today as well. ‍♀️Weather is gorgeous! Ok, if you could have ANY beverage waiting for you at your next finish line, what would it be? During the last 3 miles of this morning's longer run, I decided my top 3 would be: 1️⃣. iced tea lemonade, otherwise known as "half and half" or an Arnold Palmer. Side note: I may be turning into my dad, haha. 2️⃣. iced tea (made with black tea, unsweet, with lots of nice little ice cubes and a lemon). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣. chilled grapefruit orange nuun. A close fourth place is actual lemonade, which is the only of these beverages that I’ve named that I’ve actually had at a real life finish line: after 13 miles, that was the most beautiful, clutch lemonade of my life. (Looking above I think I’ve got a citrus/caffeine theme going!) Do you do any races with stand out drinks or food at the end? This morning on my run, I was actually just really happy thinking about my tea waiting in the fridge! 20.38 miles (7:57 pace, 2:42:08 total) for my last big long run before Grandma’s Marathon! Nice and consistent even with the heat, and my friend Rachel kept me company for the first 10 miles! Much warmer than my other long runs, where I lucked out and got 50s and light rain: today was in the 70s, but that’s still a lot cooler than what I’ve been running in lately! I was really happy that I was able to actually pick it up a bit over the last 10 even with running those alone—generally I feel like it’s always easier to keep whatever pace you’ve got if you’ve also got company! Felt really good at the end, especially compared to past training cycles, which bodes well for the race itself. During the run, I had two GUs, alternated between Roctane Summit Tea and Maurten, and then opted for some grapefruit orange nuun at the end there as I was just super thirsty! Ended up drinking all 4 of my mini water bottles (probably 10 fl oz each) plus my two bigger spare bottles (22 fl oz each) by the time I was in my car, and then stopped at Wegman’s for more drinks (where I killed a protein smoothie right there while shopping ...also notice the lemon iced tea shown here). Brunched with Phillip after his long bike ride today, and now time to chill and soak up Sunday afternoon. For this training cycle, I’ve now got three 20+ mile runs, two 18+, four 15+, a whole month of 60+ miles, and way more 10-14 mile runs than I’ve managed in the past. (I ran my 2:48 at CIM off a 16 and 17 miler!) Now just to keep calm and carry on until June 22! #RunnersLoveYoga #doyogarunfaster #grandmasmarathon2019 #letthetaperbegin
