MFW AW 2019 THE COLLECTION WAS V V V VERSACE On the line-up for AW19 were satin slip-dresses, pencil skirts, and tight-fitting tops, all in a palette of acid green, orange, and yellow, some of which were overlaid with bondage-y cage-like bras and corsets. Elsewhere, models wore high-shine coats and skirts made from patent leather croco fabric with (faux) fur stoles in bright colours, chunky woolly beanies, and quilted, monogrammed clutches. Tomo Koizumi brought the fun back to fashion week As Michael Corleone said, “just when I thought I was out, [New York Fashion Week] pulled me back in.” In a season that has thus far felt particularly devoid of celebrities and frivolity, a relatively unknown brand called Tomo Koizumi brought the fun back to fashion week. It was Koizumi’s first fashion show, held at the Marc Jacobs Madison Avenue store. Not only were there giant, loofah-like dresses, there was also a stacked cast of models and celebrities, including Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls, Rowan Blanchard, and Bella Hadid. Soon after the dresses hit the runway, they were all over Instagram. Who would resist posting about these cupcake confectionaries worn by Bella Hadid? Every guest stood around the staircase at the center of the store — no chairs. The collection was only 28 dresses, but each made an impact. Koizumi told Vogue that his ruffles represent a kind of armor and he’s also inspired by Sailor Moon’s duality of soft and strong. Those inspirations translated well. All the models — with the possible exception of Ratajkowski — looked very well protected inside of their ruffled rainbow bubbles.And seemingly loaning out his go-to creative collaborators Katie Grand, Pat McGrath and Guido to style and key the debut. Prada AW19 report: every rose has its thorn Miuccia Prada’s darkly dressed woman looked emphatically feminine — and royally pissed off. Miuccia Prada’s AW19 collection for Prada was mostly black, staged on a jagged, spiked, sponge floor, sparsely lit, and rather angry. The models wore dark wool separates, tweeds, flak jackets, sparkly shoes and lace. Dresses with the classic Prada sweetheart neckline were fashioned in a raw grey tweed. A rose print motif was encircled by thorns. The models had Wednesday Addams hairstyles (the Addams family have been a regular feature at recent Prada collections) but they just as easily recalled Greta Thunberg, the Swedish 16-year-old climate change activist, who also has waist-length braids. Prada said her collection was about fear, and the threat of war “in general”. And romance. If she was feeling a little adversarial, perhaps she has good cause. The Italian designer has always taken pride in her abstruse, stubborn, sometimes alternative point of view. She deliberately goes against the consensus. Being on the runway is proving to myself that I can do anything I want to do as long as I work really hard at it. My whole life I was told I can’t be a model because I am too short, and it’s true! According to the standards of runway modeling I should be much taller than I am, but I decided that my height will not be a determinant of my dreams. I still go for auditions and castings with a height requirement and show what I can do.
