This girl from Transnistria (a small republic within Moldova, not recognized by almost anybody in the world but, indeed, it exists) were assisting the celebrations of the 72 anniversary of the Soviet victory against the nazis during the II World War. Mostly, they were remembering their ancestors and the veterans, carrying photos of the already deceased and honouring the ones still alive. I had hardly been in the country for a few days, and my mind was still full of stereotypes and prejudices about this still qualified as a 'Soviet country' closed to the rest of the world. Despite the stereotype of Russian people (they are almost Russian) being cold people, unfriendly with the foreigner, to my surprise, during the 3 weeks I "lived" there (I rented an apartment until I was pushed to leave by the local police, "KGB" style) I found most people very welcoming to me, ready to give me a smile and very curious about why I was there. The first photo I am going to share about Transnistria is quite special. Yesterday it was the 72 aniversary of the victory against the nazis in the II World War, and during the military parade hundreds of people were on the streets of Rybnitsa carrying photos of their ancestors who lived those days and contributed to fight the enemy. Also a few veterans were there. I was the only foreigner and I was not sure about how my presence would be received. I had hardly been in the city for a few days, and my mind was still full of stereotypes and prejudices about this so-called Soviet country closed to the world. Although I had already made some photos from the distance that morning, Igor was the first person I approached directly to engage in conversation. I was struck by his perfect uniform and the pride with which he kept his grandmother's picture. After some talking he called his brothers Alexander and Daniel for one more photo. It was a family day. The photos they hold belong to their grandfather Nikifor Sazonovich, drafted into the army in 1938 and therefore having to leave their grandmother Tatyana Sevastyanovna alone with a baby and pregnant with another. According to the stories of his military comrades, the last place where he was seen was in a concentration camp. He participated in several battles at the beginning of the war. Tatiana went through the whole war in this territory occupied by the Germans and Romanians, joined afterwards the Red Army. She grew 5 children. Their grandfather Ivan Mironovich also fought during the war. Was wounded, but went through the whole war and raised 5 children. Rybnitsa, Transnistria (Moldova). These three women were volunteers to clean the streets, interesting remanent of the Soviet era. They were cleaning in my neighborhood sometimes, and that day they were just in front of the door of the apartment I had rented. When I walked next to them I said good morning (in Russian), and they replied very happy to me. I walked a bit more and turned back, and found the one on the left point at me and telling something to the other two (obviously about me). I smiled and turned back to them, introducing my self with the limited Russian I had learned in a couple of weeks. Then the woman on the left started to talk a lot to me, and I understood just a few words like "television", "microphone" and "paveda". I understood she had seen the interview they did me in the local TV , I was famous in town!
