On July 10, 1940 the air attacks on Britain from Germany intensified, setting the date for the start of the Battle of Britian. From then until October 31, 1940, Germany's air force, the Luftwaffle, would conduct continuous raids against British shipping, air bases, factories, other military targets, and eventually civilian positions. These air attacks meant to weaken the British enough for Operation Sea Lion to be put into motion, the planned German invasion of the British mainland. After almost 4 fruitless months, German command called off the offensive, abandoning their operation plans. Sabaton's song, "Aces in Exile", focuses on the foreign pilots' contribution to the British victory, and I will as well. One source shows the total of foreign pilots recognized by the Royal Air Force (RAF) to have been 574, with the majority from Poland, New Zealand, Canada, and Czechoslovakia. Pilots from Belgium, Australia, South Africa, France, Ireland, and the U.S. number from 10 to 30 per country, while a handful  came from other British dominions. Polish airmen in Britain numbered 8500, but they could not serve as pilots until they learned English. In July, 2 Polish fighter squadrons had been formed, which consisted of Polish pilots and ground crews with British officers. They began fighting in August, with 89 pilots in the 2 squadrons and 50 others in RAF squadrons. Most Polish pilots were experienced in fighting, as they had likely participated in either the defence of Poland, the defence of France, or both. They used more effective tactics than the British RAF doctrine, getting in very close--almost withing crashing range--to an enemy plane and ripping it to shreds. The Polish had claimed 201 enemy planes shot down, and No. 303 Squadron (the one refered to in the song) (4) claimed the most kills of any Allied squadron over the course of the battle at 126. Witold Urbanowicz of that squadron was the top Polish ace with 15 claimed kills. Tony Głowacki was 1 of 2 Allied pilots in the battle to become an ace-in-day, shooting down 5 Germans on August 24. 30 Polish pilots were killed in the battle, giving them a very low death rate considering their tactics and kill claims.
