If your story has a flawed character, Michael Arndt recommends that the story open by dramatizing the character in their essence--engulfed in their obsession. For Woody, playing with Andy is his favorite thing. For Mr. Incredible, being a superhero is his favorite thing. For Marlin, taking care of Nemo and being a family man is his obsession. "Character flaws come out of the grand obsession. It's a good thing (or something rooted in good intentions) that's been taken too far." Woody takes pride in being Andy's favorite toy. He loves being Andy's favorite toy so much that he doesn't want to share that with anyone. Marlin takes pride in his family. He wants so badly to be a good parent that he's insecure, untrusting, dependent. Mr. Incredible takes pride in being Mr. #1 and he doesn't want to share that with anyone--especially not a sidekick. If you've got a flawed character, be sure to dramatize their obsession. The terms "antagonist" and "villain" are sometimes used interchangeably. There is a difference, however. We can think of a "villain" as a representation of the story's negative theme. The villain is a thematic role and implies a negative morality. The antagonist (or opponent), on the other hand, serves as the dramatic opponent to the protagonist. In other words, the antagonist serves a dramatic function, rather than a thematic function. Often villains are also antagonists. However, your story might have an opponent who is not actually a villain. The opponent might be more moral than the protagonist! This can especially be the case if the protagonist is a flawed character. For instance, Buzz is Woody's antagonist but not a villain. In this way, an antagonist stands in opposition to a character by being opposed to their dramatic goal, but that antagonist need not be immoral. The opponent in a romance is actually the romantic partner (i.e. the person standing in the way--for a time--of the protagonist winning the romantic partner's love). The romantic partner is an antagonist but seldom a villain. In Breaking Bad, Hank is Walter's antagonist. Is Hank a villain, though? Hardly. Consider whether your antagonist is a villain.
