POPPIES! My poppies are blooming left and right which means poppy pods will be ready!! These have become a favourite of mine through @sacredelements (The poppy queen herself) inspired me to really explore growing them this year. And truthfully I have so many breadseed that need to go in the ground... like yesterday... What is your favourite variety of poppy? Lately I have been obsessing over peony poppies. I have finally finished planting in our new veggie garden area except 2 beds, space around the arbour and a small patch where I plan on putting raspberry plants. We removed the last patch of grass last year and installed raised beds and created wood chip pathways. The pathways are so far free of any weeds. The work seems much less than maintaining a patch of grass full of weeds. Since there is green space on two sides of our lot, there was no way to control the weeds. Included in the post are some pictures of raised bed installation. We cut the grass to the ground level and let the patch dry for few days. Then attached the bed frames to the ground with wood stakes. Then covered the ground and inside of the beds with thick brown paper. All beds were filled with soil and compost and pathways were filled with 8 inch deep layer of wood chips. The wood chips were provided for free by a local tree service company. All beds have 3/4 inch hollow pipe sections attached at regular intervals. We can insert 1/2 inch pipes in these sections to create hoops or also insert bamboo stakes. I am very thankful for the inspiration from the community of amazing gardeners around the world! Please give me some suggestions for fast growing edible plants for the arbour!

“@BiodiversidadAlimentaria is a national alliance that brings together the indigenous peoples Diaguita, Mapuche and Aymara; different peasants throughout the country and professionals; whose objective is the recovery and revaluation of traditional seeds of different cultures, seeds that were cultivated in ancient times and that today have been disappearing due to the replacement by commercial varieties and hybrids. We are concerned with recovering, in addition to the seed, the associated history, the knowledge that grandparents and grandmothers possessed about their forms of consumption, cultivation or use. In 2016, after a lot of work, we inaugurated the first Community Seedbank of Chile, administered by the Diaguita people and that has more than 900 recovered varieties. The seeds are the basis of life and health, an integral part of culture and tradition, even spirituality, being your ally is the best legacy that can be left to future generations, saving it is saving us, protecting it is protecting us. Because it is the only way you can decide what you eat and why the whole process from sowing to eating is a process of learning, surprise, happiness and even uncertainty that keeps you as a protector of life itself. In the years that we have been recovering traditional seeds, hundreds of varieties have passed through our hands and gardens. Almost all of them are resistant to drought, pests, diseases, salinity, and many other things. In these years of work we have proven and demonstrated that most of the traditional varieties that we have recovered have higher yields than the hybrid varieties, the farmers themselves have seen their benefits and have become agents of change. Never leave aside the old varieties, those that really healed us and delivered nutrition, those that were linked to a history, whether family or territorial. Meet Pradeep Kumar Manickam @rangamalaiorganics from Bangalore, India "I am from an agricultural family. My grandfather was a farmer but not my father. I was raised as a non farmer, too. I graduated to be an IT engineer and I have been working in the software industry for past 14 years. For last four years, I am doing farming during weekends on our ancestral land in Tamilnadu surrounding Dindugul and Karur district. We believe in poly culture and grow almost everything ranging from native heirloom varieties of vegetables, pulses, legumes, oil crops, millets and paddy. We started with 1 acre and we have now expanded to 15 acres. It has taken us 4 years to learn the golden rules in natural farming: Harvest rain water, condition the soil and control weeds by mulching. We manage a community seed bank for native seeds. We collect native seed varieties from local seed banks, native seed savers and farmers, multiply at our farm and distribute the seeds to farmers and home gardeners. At present we have 150 native seed varieties. With the help from some free willed architects and volunteers, we are working on a project to build a 100% natural building made from locally available building materials to store and preserve all our native seeds through indigenous storage methods. We aim to create awareness about our rich bio diversified native seeds and cost efficient natural buildings. We conduct farm Internship programs to achieve win-win state for both farmers and the interns/volunteers. The interns stay with us at the farm, learn, practice, document and help us with our day to day farm activities. I am not a full time farmer yet, but hope I soon become. I had no previous knowledge of farming but I researched and read incessantly; if you start seeking, you get what you want. I am very passionate in what I do whether it is office work or farming; and that is what is driving me without mental tiredness."
