Your true self is right there buried under cultural conditionings, other peoples opinions, and the inaccurate conclusions your drew as a child and adult that became your beliefs about who you are. “Finding yourself” is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering of who you were before the world got its hands on you” - unknown. I happened to come across the quote the other day when a friend @hannahshinton shared on Facebook. I was immediately drawn to its message and meanings. I often ponder this thought and this idea of “true self” versus “culturally conditioned self” that I come into constant conflict with. I find myself subject to certain frame works of thinking or making decisions because of societal norms and social constructs. Consume. Go to school. Get a job. Save your money. Consume. Buy a house. Have a family. Consume. When I take a step back and think about my true self, that is not me. That is not what I want my life to look like. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I have a passionate dislike for many holidays - more so, mass detached non-religious based consumerism. Don’t get me wrong, the family dinners and appreciation of relationships is a wonderful thing, but why include mass consumerism as seen at Christmas? This mass consumerism is based on a linear economy which is utmost wasteful and somehow still freaking plastic based. We have become to detached from the true meaning of relationships and sadly place value in things instead of people. When I think about my true self and my life ahead, I see myself travelling the world, volunteering, buying only second hand and sustainable items, temporarily living in my voltswagon van, working on wildlife projects in the Arctic, Africa and Australia, living a waste free life style, promoting environmental awareness, and maybe one day, settling down to live off the land - living a simple life style. Perhaps It sounds like “I know who I am” but this is when the pressure of social conditioning comes into play... ••• read remaining in comments⬇️•••

And so I began to see, How I was crawling out of my self I began to see where I was misslead I began to understand Why I got quiet Why I had to stay invisible and unnoticed and why I came to be a hermit, I think I was born into one for many reasons Reasons of no importance but important to see Not to take space and make noises To be careful and timid. To transform is painful and hard to point out why and it takes time and even more time. A very lonely path to walk So many things lost...fallen away It's tricky when getting manipulated from a million directions in this world. So many people want to carry "the truth" As humans we like to believe in something and it's very missleading and destructive a lot of times. People take advantage of your wild, curiosity and will to learn and listen. Not because they want to hurt you, but because they want to hear their own voice more to make their own belief stronger. It's just their own propaganda for their own survival. Not mine or yours. Listen but block your ears, see but do not get fooled. So I figured, staying a hermit, retreating, going away, hiding from time to time in solitude. Is my saviour and best companion. In nature, in silence, for me is my way of surviving. Of blocking it out. What is not mine. This is where I feel and find truth. It's all in the trees and in the ground. It's all in my bones and blood. And that's all.... . .
