A historical photograph of the gardens at the New Palace of Sanssouci from the workshop of Ottomar Anschütz. The picture was taken between 1907 and 1915. Emil Ludwig Walter Sello, the famous garden architect who was originally responsible for those gardens, was born on this day 203 years ago. In 1854, Sello received the title of Gardener of the Court, six years later his own territory and the Gardener’s House at the New Palace. When his teacher Lenné died unexpectedly in 1866, Sello's life took a decisive turn. His territory was withdrawn from the garden administration and directly subordinated to the Crown Prince Frederick William and his wife Victoria. Sello fundamentally redesigned the surroundings of the New Palace. He planted herb gardens, play gardens for the children of the Crown Prince and two orchards for snacking. The relationship with Victoria was so intimate that the art-talented Crown Princess in later years even painted an impressive portrait of Sello that is now in family ownership. _______ Eine historische Aufnahme der Gärten am Neuen Palais aus der Werkstatt von Ottomar Anschütz. Emil Ludwig Walter Sello, der berühmte Gartenarchitekt, auf den diese Anlagen zurückgehen, wurde heute vor 203 Jahren geboren. 1854 erhielt Sello den Titel „Hofgärtner“, sechs Jahre später dann sein eigenes Revier und das Hofgärtnerhaus am Neuen Palais. Als sein Lehrer Lenné 1866 überraschend starb, nahm Sellos Leben die entscheidende Wendung. Sein Revier wurde der Gartendirektion entzogen und direkt dem Kronprinzenpaar Friedrich Wilhelm und Victoria unterstellt. Sello gestaltete die Umgebung des Neuen Palais grundlegend um. Er legte Heilkräutergärten, Spielgärten für die Kinder des Kronprinzenpaares und Obstgärten zum Naschen an. Das Verhältnis zu Victoria war so innig, dass die kunstbegabte Kronprinzessin in späteren Jahren sogar ein eindrucksvolles Porträt von Sello malte, dass sich heute in Familienbesitz befindet.
