I recently started to use the medium format camera I got a little more. Its hefty so it really forces me to slow down a little to take my photos. As a result what I get is a focus on still life. A focus on light, on how we display our trappings as singaporeans alive. Of course this is not without the odd intruder. Shot on a roll of Fuji Superia 100 that expired in 2005. - I can tell you a story of the time I fell apart behind the closed door of a stairwell I could tell you the story of the time I almost died, in a place I didn't want to be I might even tell you that I am lost, that I know nothing that whever that comes tumbling out of my mouth is nothing more than a vague apology I want a truth that doesn't feel like I'm putting on a mask I want a life that feels like I've been here from the start I want to know where you were looking before you lost everything in the fire. Curiosity level: thoughtful and satirical! ( by @theartshouse) • “I had also take a five-year leave of absence from writing because, I decided, life without poetry was, in pragmatic terms, richer than poetry without life.” • Felix does personal introductions of his poems before the collection, and that has to be my favorite thing about this anthology. There’s nothing quite as rich as getting into the author’s head behind a set of poems; it just enriched the entire experience. I’d enjoyed his Singapore Siu Dai book (2014) a lot, and so naturally I gravitated towards his satirical poems • Again, I’m not really a big fan of poetry (at least not yet), and I think it takes me twice the effort to appreciate them because I’m always [annoyingly] looking out for plot when I’m just supposed to enjoy the suspended moments within the poems. Curiosity level: Seeing beyond what’s common in Common Life ( by @ethosbooks) • ... “join and seam, redesign your dream; / but too bad, he says he’s no creator, / what you are he cannot alter.” / - Magician • When Anne Lee Tzu Pheng first saw Ho Chee Lick’s drawings, poetic inspiration sprang into mind. This book consists of over 80 drawings of everyday Singaporean scenes - what makes up the Common Life. Anne then adds another precious dimension to Chee Lick’s art work with her poems. Even if you’re not really a “poetry person”, you’d still enjoy these crayon sketches - evocative and moving. • I honestly enjoyed the poems; they were thought-provoking and jolting. The kind that sort of stops your heart at the realisation of what it might possibly mean; or mean for you, specifically. Anne breathes life into mannikins, discarded furniture, quiet cobblers. An old man with his trolley. Roasted pigs and ducks. Let Anne’s poems and Chee Lick’s art guide you, and not dictate - What can YOU see in these common life things/experiences? ( by @localbookssg) • “Anybody would be dumb to be my sister’s sister.” • Anne Lee reminisces about random childhood events in this book of poems. Growing up as a middle child. Being compared to her siblings. Having uncontrollable laughing and crying fits. Her grandmother’s death, too. She parallels her grandma’s coffin to a big, brown boat, and imagines that she was going far away. She recounts her mooncake-munching days, or when she stood at the corner (for punishment?) but instead of closing her off from the world, it opened up her imagination. • Reading her book will open your mind to your own childhood stories! Do you have an unforgettable childhood memory? For me, it was the Disappearing Dog. It was the first time I experienced a proper ‘miracle’. I was 9 years old and walking to school when I saw an angry dog on the pavement. I was terrified of dogs whether cute or cuddly, so imagine the sheer terror of seeing this one, with its bared teeth. I remember flinging the art bag weakly at the dog before running, shouting “God, save me!”. After running for about 20 metres (trust me, I knew that I shouldn’t even be running), I didn’t hear any more dog-panting sounds. I turned timidly, and it had Disappeared. It wasn’t even anywhere close by - not even across the road! Till today, I’ve wondered what had happened to the Disappearing Dog. • What about you?
