I have been speaking with people about sharks ending up in makeup and a high percentage of them thought that sharks for Squalane/Squalene were taken from bycatch, but this is a false assumption. Three million deep sea sharks are targetted and killed just for their livers each year. These are threatened species and if somehow the livers were taken from sharks in bycatch...it would be better but even then, there's nothing sustainable about killing sharks. · · ❎ Did you know that it takes 6 000 sharks to create one ton of Squalene/Squalane? The global demand for this oil is 1 000 - 2 000 tons per year! Don't be fooled into thinking Squalane is sustainable and plant derived because it is created by using shark liver oil(Squalene). If the sourcing of the Squalane is not revealed then it is shark-derived. Please speak up for sharks!! ❎ · · 33 % of open-water sharks are facing extinction and if we dont change the way we life our life, we could destroy the very existence of an animal we cannot afford to lose. 2.7 million deep sea sharks are being killed each year for their livers. They are being harvested for an oil which is called Squalene and when it is hydrogenated it becomes Squalane. Squalane can be found in most cosmetics and when the sourcing is not written, there's a big chance that it is shark-derived Squalane. Big cosmetics companies are still using unsustainable sources and this needs to stop. Tomorrow, my hero, inspiration, and dear friend’s movie launches in a record-setting 78 theaters across Canada, a project that has consumed my heart, mind and life since we lost him. I don’t think any true hero would consider themselves one – and Rob was no exception. I think he’d want people to know that his passion and what he did – giving everything he had for what he loved, the stuff legends are made of – is something every single person has within them as well. Rob believed everyone could be a hero for a species or ecosystem; that we all had a super power waiting to be unleashed.  He’d inspire everyone he met to “take what they’re good at and what they are passionate about and smash them together to lead a life of purpose.” He, through his own actions, showed us that preservation of life on earth was the coolest and most rewarding mission anyone could take on.  And he helped us realize activism doesn’t have to be complicated; every day, in every aspect of our life, we have the ability to do something to make our world a better place. Even the little things add up to start a ground swell. In a time when we are collectively overwhelmed with the state the world is in, we need Rob’s leadership now more than ever.  And the beautiful thing is, we still have it thanks to this amazing film, as well as to his detailed notes and the ten-year plan he left behind, unlocked on his computer with the perfectly chosen password “gratitude”. None of us – individually or combined – could fill the enormous shoes this real-life hero has left us – but I’m honored to be a part of @teamsharkwater - a team who is working together to carry out Rob’s vision. I really hope you join us. Please, please, please see the movie – and bring all your friends on opening weekend. It will make a huge impact for the future of the film.  And, I know everyone will be inspired coming out of the film to take Rob’s mission - or whatever else you are passionate about - forward. In that way, his legacy lives on in all of us.
