Experiencing the moment! • Last weekend we had glorious weather fuelling a mass exodus from the city to coastlines around the country. Being out and enjoying this weather, in great surroundings and even better company provided the answer to a dilemma I have been debating with myself: The value of social media versus the associated downsides. • Before TNE I had no Instagram account and ever since starting it I have struggled with certain aspects but still felt it was a good way to share the message of the values we stand for. However, of late I have realised how detrimental I’ve been finding the Insta Story aspect of the platform on my real life experiences: Taking time out of activities I enjoy to capture some footage was detracting from the enjoyment of the overall experience. • I know some people enjoy sharing what they are doing but I can safely say the less time I spend posting the better. It took me several months to get semi-comfortable putting anything on here, and it is still an effort driven by the fact that I believe in a cause that is bigger than myself. So for now I’m going to quit the stories and use the main gallery which is much easier to manage without impacting on my day to day enjoyment of life. Alongside this I’m going to quit consuming stories and generally limit my time on social media much more. Having done this for the past week already I can’t tell you how much better I feel for it! • But one aspect of these platforms I do think is really positive are the connections they allow, being able to build relationships with people you may not otherwise cross paths with. Through this account I’ve met some fantastic people and been part of some great events. And it would be great to encourage more in person activities like the Tough Mudder a team of us from our TNE online community will be taking part in on 6th July in aid of Help for Heroes. Organising it through social media makes the process easy while also facilitating positive face-to-face interaction. • It’s an open invite so if anyone wants to join us just drop me an email: simon@thenaturaledge.com
