The Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe's extraordinary story came about due to the determination of the recently retired racing driver, Carroll Shelby. His desire to beat Ferrari and knock them off their lofty perch was all-consuming.
Shelby modeled his dream machine on the basis of a previous racer he had developed, the AC Cobra Roadster. The coupe came with captivating style and delivered a new generation of classic muscle.
The original of only six ever built, it was the first American car to beat Ferrari on its own turf and shatter speed records along the way.
It was designed with maximum speed in mind, something it used to its advantage when winning at LeMans. Here, maximum speed was vital at the 3-mile long Mulsanne straight where passing and pulling away was vital.
In it's first year, 1964, the Shelby Daytona did well winning the 24 hour LeMans.
Throughout the year, the Daytona outclassed Corvettes, Lolas, Porsches, and Alfas.
Unfortunately for the Daytona, the mighty Ferrari GTO's were still dominant that year and took the championship.
In 1965, Shelby finally got his wish and his Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe's won the championship. History was made as it was the first American racing team to do so, winning a staggering 9 of the 12 races that year.
They secured crucial wins in yet more historic races, such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. .. under the hood of "Carroll Shelby's Secret Weapon", the 550 HP big block powered Shelby Daytona Coupe.
