In 1998, which is 44 years after they had built their last passenger ship, our neighbours at Blohm + Voss started a new cruiseship project. That project was an order of two ships that had been placed by the Greek shipping company Royal Olympic Cruises. The peculiarity of this enterprise was to make cruise ships, but built for speed. They were made to have the stability needed by a ship transporting over 900 passengers plus the crew. Despite that, they both have a top speed of 28 knots - which is a lot for a cruise ship. To reach this goal, the naval architects combined a specially powerful engine with a hull form of their own patent, called "Fast Monohull". The design is supposed to give the ship the hydrodynamics of a submarine. The data from Blohm + Voss speaks of energy savings of 20%, when compared with other hulls of cruiseship of a similar size. The first ship of the class was delivered in the year 2000 and named Olympic Voyager. Her owner sold her because of financial problems in 2004. After several owner and name changes she is now on duty for the Bohai Cruise Company as the Chinese Taishan. Her sister, the Olympic Explorer, was delivered in 2002. She was also sold in 2004, becoming the MV Explorer for @semesteratsea . After 10 years in this duty, she was sold again. Today she voyages for Diamond Cruises as the Glory Sea. This magnificent yard model displaying the form of the class in a scale of 1:100 is at the moment in the depot of the museum.
