Noticing a jump in followers, and I’m suspecting it’s due to the time of year when people are starting new year’s resolutions. Many of you may be aspiring to declutter your homes. . So here’s a small introduction: I am self-professed consumerist and maximalist who has been working daily throughout 2018 to declutter my home. Living a life with less has been my dream for years but it took me too long to start, simply because I didn’t know how and I was overwhelmed. A year ago, I finally got my act together and started with one room, and then everything else spiraled from there. I started this IG page as a tool to hold myself accountable towards my goal. . Throughout the year I purged over 10,000 items from my home and emptied over 60 plastic bins and bankers boxes worth of stuff. I let go of roughly four large filing cabinets worth of files and paper. I emptied my bedroom of two large bedside tables and two of the largest dressers you have ever seen, and left the empty space empty. . If I can do this, then so can you. . Just start. . And don’t stop. . How? With what time? . I work full-time and have two kids with too much homework and daily extra-curricular activities. I purged every free moment I had, obsessively. . If I can do this, then so can you. Your home is not a storage unit. . In Goodbye Things, Fumio Sasaki at one point discusses storage units and our homes. Reading this last year gave me an ah-hah moment when I realized that I was living in a storage unit instead of a home. . After that realization, whenever I got stuck and found myself wanting to keep things in case or for one day, I reminded myself of these words. . Create a sanctuary, not a storage unit. . Btw., the book is a great read and amazing tool, especially if you are just beginning your decluttering journey. Plunge in & organize one of the messiest & most cluttered areas of the home...the Linen Closet. Take everything out of the closet first, so you can assess, declutter & simplify this space. This closet is where all the guests go for extra pillows, blankets, towels, washcloths & soaps. This is great motivation for cleaning it, knowing everyone sees it & uses it. Storage bins keep the messier looking linens corralled neatly together & hidden (like hard to fold fitted sheets). Group like items together & fold them neatly so all edges are facing to the back or down. This will give the closet a uniform & tidy look. Coordinating colors will also help to keep things cohesive. Adding labels is another way to keep things uniformed & organized. They add the cherry on top. Now you don’t have to be embarrassed every time the linen closet door is opened. You will be amazed at how good you feel when everything is in order. Curling up in a favorite chair to begin re-reading the first three chapters of The Minimalist Home by @joshua_becker. . I purchased this book back in December to reboot my #minimalist journey, and I got a great start on understanding and implementing his principles. However, I let life get in my way. I began the decluttering process of the family room, and I certainly made wonderful progress. But since then, my minimizing has not been consistent. . So here we go for real. It’s time to get started again, build a routine, and keep the momentum going. In the next few days, I will reread these chapters and then I will dive into decluttering the living room and family room. By next Saturday, there will be plenty of evidence documenting my progress.
