This is a difficult video to watch, but everyone MUST be made aware of how urgent this problem is so please watch and share this important post with your followers. Roughly 50 years ago, only 5% of sea birds had a few pieces of plastic in their stomachs, but the percentage has risen to 90% and by 2050 it will reach 99%! Remember, these birds feed their young whatever they put in their mouths so they are literally feeding their chicks to death due to them consuming all these plastic pieces! #PRESSUREONPOWERNATIONS The U.S. is one of a few countries that has not signed on to a historic UN agreement to limit plastic pollution.
⠀⠀⠀
The agreement was reached Friday after a two-week meeting of the Conferences of Parties (COPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions in Geneva. It took the form of an amendment to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal, which is backed by 187 countries excluding the U.S. More than 180 governments agreed to amend the convention to include plastic waste and improve the regulation of its trade. US reportedly opposed deal, which follows concerns that villages in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia had ‘turned into dumpsites’
⠀⠀⠀
"Plastic waste is acknowledged as one of the world's most pressing environmental issues, and the fact that this week close to 1 million people around the world signed a petition urging Basel Convention Parties to take action here in Geneva at the COPs is a sign that public awareness and desire for action is high," UN Environment's Executive Secretary of the three conventions Rolph Payet said in a press release.
⠀⠀⠀
The agreement comes amidst growing awareness of the proliferation of plastic in the environment. There are now 100 million tonnes (approximately 110 million U.S. tons) of plastic in the oceans, and 80 to 90 percent of it comes from land, UN Environment said.
⠀⠀⠀
Payet told the Associated Press that the agreement was "historic" because it is "legally binding." It also moved remarkably quickly from proposal to agreement for a UN accord.
#PRESSUREONCORPORATIONS The plastic crisis isn't just ugly — it's fueling global warming
⠀⠀⠀
Plastic, as we know, is everywhere. In waterways, in animals, even in our food. As if that isn't bad enough, a new report shows it's also accelerating global warming. Stopping climate change also means curbing plastic. Although in Germany, for example, plastic production decreased by 3.1 % in 2018 (mostly due to a slump in the demand for cars) and parts of the world have introduced plastic bans, it's on the rise worldwide.
⠀⠀⠀
Part of the reason for this is that many of the companies that manufacture plastic resins are the same companies that manufacture oil and gas: Mobil, Shell, Chevron, and Total, for example. That the oil industry is propping up plastics at a time when the world is slowly phasing out fossil fuel-powered energy is no coincidence, Muffett lead author of the CIEL report points out.
⠀⠀⠀
"A s they see the world moving away from an energy economy based on oil and gas, these companies are increasingly relying on a shift into plastics and other petrochemicals for their long-term business strength. Producing plastic is how the fossil fuel industry is able to "take what would otherwise be a waste stream and turn it into a profit stream », he said. ⠀⠀⠀
Over the next 10 years, the report projected that emissions from the plastics lifecycle could reach 1.34 gigatons per year — equivalent to the emissions from more than 295 500-megawatt coal-fired power plants operating at full capacity.

FACTS A truck load of rubbish ends up in the ocean every minute in the world. As an example, here is what rainy season in Indonesia looks like.
⠀⠀⠀
The rainy season in Indonesia created a river of #plasticpollution and sadly this is happening in more and more places around the world....this video is just one example of how plastic trash from across the globe has been piling up in Indonesia. The country is incapable of absorbing the tens of millions of tons that China had previously taken, and mismanaged waste is making its way to the ocean.
⠀⠀⠀
"Much of the marine plastic litter in Indonesia originates from land-based sources," said Thomas Wright, a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland, whose research focuses on plastic waste in Indonesia. "If a household does not have access to a recycling plant or waste collection services, household waste - including plastic - is discarded in a river or burned."
⠀⠀⠀
Almost everything Indonesians buy comes wrapped in plastic or is placed into a plastic bag whether at a small roadside stall, a traditional market, a restaurant or a high-end boutique. The vast archipelago aims to reduce plastic waste by 70 percent by the year 2025.
⠀⠀⠀
Thomas Wright points out that although the government-led ban is an important step and will certainly have a significant effect on the amount of plastic waste produced in Indonesia, there is an urgent need to implement sustainable rubbish collection services and management facilities.

FACTS Bottled Water Drinkers Could Consume Up to 640,000 Microplastics a Year
⠀⠀⠀
A new report is finding that our water bottles are not safe from microplastic pollution.
⠀⠀⠀
Bathroom and shower specialists @Showerstoyou analyzed the Plus Plastic report by @orbmedia to reveal how much plastic is in our favorite water bottles. More specifically, these plastics are called microplastics.
⠀⠀⠀
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, microplastics are any type of plastic fragment that is less than five millimeters in length, and they are everywhere.
⠀⠀⠀
Showerstoyou found that Nestlé Pure Life was the brand with the most microplastics, about 10,390 particles per liter. Second worst was Indian bottled water provider Bisleri with 5,230 particles per liter. Thereafter, were Gerolsteiner (5,160), Aqua (4,713), Epura (2,267) and Aquafina (1,295).
⠀⠀⠀
San Pellegrino was found to have the least amount of microplastics with a mere 74 per liter, followed by Evian (256), Dasani (335), Wahaha (731) and Minalba (863).
⠀⠀⠀
Showerstoyou estimates that Nestlé Pure Life drinkers could be consuming a staggering 640,024 microplastics a year. And the numbers aren't much better for other brands. Bisleri drinkers could be consuming up to 322,168 microplastics a year. Gerolsteiner (317,856), Aqua (290,321), Epura (139,647), Aquafina (79,772), Minalba (53,161), Wahaha (45,030), Dasani (20,636), Evian (15,770) and San Pellegrino (4,558).

Words from the inspirational Jacques Cousteau that ring true now, more than ever before!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cousteau was a French marine explorer, inventor, filmmaker and conservationist. He sailed the world for much of the late 20th century, educating millions of people about the Earth's oceans and its inhabitants. He inspired their protection and pioneered marine conservation
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Little of what he did would of been impossible if it were not for scuba gear. Jacques also helped to develop the Aqua-Lung, the world's first self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With the Aqua-Lung, he and his crew were able to explore and film parts of the ocean depths that had never been seen before. He brought a whole new world to viewers!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He also helped restrict commercial whaling in 1986 and stopped the underwater dumping of nuclear waste
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let his words and legacy live on, please help us spread the message about plastic pollution, help us protect our oceans and inspire others to change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One small act multiplied by millions can transform the world!!!
