The exceptional privilege of painting with Ken Howard RA at his London studio Oriel, one of London’s last remaining historic studios and previously home to Sir William Orpen. #christophermike #kenhoward #oilpainting #williamorpen #sirwilliamorpen #kenhowardra #michaelharding #michaelhardingpaints #originalart #michaelhardingoilpaints #pumphouseartists #bowarts #rawlabs_ #nude
I particularly liked this portrait of John Everett painted by Sir William Orpen in 1900 and hanging in The Queen’s House in Greenwich. Stylistically aspirational is an understatement.

The note on this painting reads;
‘John Everett and William Orpen were close friends. They shared lodgings when studying art together. Around the same time, Everett developed a passion for seafaring and, after his first sea voyage in 1898, made marine painting his speciality. Here his friend portrays him as an elegant dandy, casually sitting among his drawings of ships.’

Major Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen, (1878 – 1931), was an Irish artist who worked mainly in London. Orpen was a fine draughtsman and a popular, commercially successful, painter of portraits for the well-to-do in Edwardian society, though many of his most striking paintings are self-portraits.

T.E. Lawrence painted in 1919 by Sir William Orpen (1878–1931). Orpen was a master! I’m reading his wonderful book at the moment; ‘An Outline of Art’, 1924. -
Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO (1888 – 1935) was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer. He is best known for the part he played in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. His extraordinary writing ability enabled him to describe the campaigns in which he was involved with enormous vivacity and clarity. He became internationally famous as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ - a title used for the 1962 film based on his wartime activities starring Peter O’Toole.

#sirwilliamorpen #portraitofgrace #portrait
