Many do not know that I grew up most of my life thinking I would become a professional ballerina. My very first class was when I was 3 years old. I continued to study ballet for 14 years and while I preferred all the other forms of dance, ballet was my focus. That is, until my hips collapsed when I was 17 and I had to retire my pointe shoes. While I was devastated externally, inside my being I was relieved. I never liked pointe. It hurt my feet so much, I didn’t have the strength or the grace that all the other students had and it made me feel completely insecure. Ballet without forcing my toes to hold my entire body weight was not an option, ballerinas danced on pointe shoes. Once I was freed of ballet, I began to explore all other types of dance that did not put stress on my hips or require a turnout. And that is when I discovered Latin Ballroom. It wasn’t until I began dancing with a partner that I finally felt at home with my body and how it responded to music. My feet instinctually followed the patterns my lead provided. My arms felt purpose to be placed upon my counterpart’s. The rhythm was familiar, natural, as if I had spent lifetimes dancing salsa in Cuba and the Dominican. ⠀ ⠀ To this day, dance is my favorite form of artistic expression. The moment I hear music, my whole self responds. Not just my physical body but my mind begins choreographing, my energy shifts, my stress dissolves. ⠀ ⠀ I have been without a dance instructor for the last 6 years and I have seen how it’s affected me. I feel a little lost, disconnected from myself. So I decided to seek out instruction again. And joined an all-adult studio. Contemporary, lyrical, broadway, hip hop, tap, jazz, ballroom. ⠀ ⠀ I’m doing it all. Except ballet. And it feels glorious.
