Read this if you're anxious about the future Throughout our entire life we're taught to somehow plan for the next phase of life. In primary school we learn to brace ourselves for high school. In high school we're already being prepped for matric, and in matric all everybody talks about is university. By the time one settles/completes uni, the topic of marriage arises and once again, we have to brace ourselves for what comes thereafter: parenthood, mid life crises, old age. We keep treating life like it’s a rollercoaster, never truly enjoying the present because we're anxious about the unknown. We never stop worrying about the "what if's" and wait in anticipation for our next obstacle and challenge, doing ourselves a disservice by not experiencing true joy from present moments. It's good to be prepared and realistic but this becomes unhealthy when one becomes obsessive, overthinking anxious scenarios which probably aren't going to happen. The future is not some crazy monster on the verge of attacking. We need to change our pessimistic mindsets. The future is what you make of it, it's predetermined and will work itself out. We will undoubtedly continue to face challenges because how else does one learn and experience growth? However, we are in control of how we react and our feelings. Learn to celebrate each new morning, new beginnings and experiences. Let's celebrate the people we haven't met yet, the love we haven't felt yet. Happiness includes a combination of how we think about our current lives and how much positive emotion we experience. There are times in our lives when we may not be depressed or miserable, but we’re still not truly happy. We just go through the motions whilst life passes us by. Although a portion of your happiness is shaped by life circumstances, there is yet another aspect of your happiness that is actually within your control. If you are feeling stuck, uninspired, or simply bored with life, you need to get real with yourself by accepting that you are your own priority. Find time to do the things that you enjoy. Nurture yourself. Build more positive relationships and develop friendships with those who inspire more joy and laughter in your life. Increase your faith by doing practices that feed your spirit, such as looking beyond current set-backs and still seeing the awe, beauty, possibilities and miracles around you. Don't surrender to a joyless life. Take steps to get back on the path that makes your heart sing.
