On 5 May 1961, United States Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. became the first American to be launched into space. Shepard named his Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7.
The video shows Shepard enduring a maximum deceleration of 11.6 g’s during reentry by expressing "OK, OK." He had trained for more than 12 g’s prior to flight. At 21,000 feet, a 6-foot droghue chute was deployed followed by the 63-foot main chute at 10,000 feet. Freedom 7 splashed-down in the Atlantic Ocean 15 minutes and 28 seconds after lift-off.#spaceflight #rocketsspace #spaceexplorers

At 105 meters, the N1-L3, was the Soviet Union's answer to the Saturn V. The first stage was powered by 30 engines that is the most powerful rocket stage ever built. Unlike the Saturn V the N1 did not have a comparable full up test program that resulted in 4 test flights which all resulted in failure prior to first stage separation. The video shows the two launches performed in 1969. The second launch attempt saw the N1 only reach the height of the launch pad tower before all its engines shut down, causing the fully fuelled rocket to fall back on the pad. The explosion destroyed the pad and is considered one of the largest non nuclear explosions, equal to 2000 tons of TNT.
