Day 702 - Well that was a rough two days! . . I just wanted to do a little thank you for all the messages and support from Sunday, I’m still not 100% and I stink like I’ve been in here a year, but I’m smiling and in safe hands, the staff here have been amazing! . . So far we think the cause of it all was an underlying water infection and possibly food poisoning UTI’s are very common with spinal cord injury’s but also very nasty if not caught in time, I just think the combination of the two was way to much for my body to deal with and just sent me into shock . . As always though it’s been a massive learning curve, because although I knew it deep down that there’s so much more to this injury then just learning to walk, the positive thing about this weekend is that it’s woken me back up to it all, the insides of my body just don’t work like they did before and as much as I live a normal life, I need always have the correct things in place for when something funny pops along! . . Anyway thank you all for the kind words and concern, but I’m on the mend and will be back doing stupid challenges shortly! . . Also thank you to Kate who’s been in the past few days and wiped my arse that part was never on the job description she’s a ⭐️ . . #onthemend #positiveineverything #stillfeelsick #spinalcordinjury #wheelchairlife #recovery #positivity #thanksforthesupport

Day 227 - home! I’m out. Officially after 227 days in hospital I am free! 7 and a half months later. Man, this has been the hardest time I have ever had and probably will ever experience. This injury literally MAKES or BREAKS you. And I am determined that it will MAKE ME! We hear about these stories on the news and in the paper but we never believe it will happen to us. This is the biggest heartbreak ever. Losing my legs, my independence and what felt like my life, but my life doesn’t stop here. This isn’t the end, maybe it’s only the beginning and I am so scared but so excited to see where life takes me. Don’t ever take life for granted, appreciate everything. Every time you wake up and stand up out of bed, every time you run down the stairs and put your shoes on, every time you hold a pen and write and every time you put on your clothes. These are things we never think we can lose so we never pay attention to them but they are the things I miss. So here’s to my next stage of recovery. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get this far ✨

#WhenICallMyselfDIsabled I realize that I don’t often call myself disabled, that the people completely removed from my disability are more concerned about what to call me than I am. I don’t need “person first” language because being disabled doesn’t make me less of a person. If you find yourself uncertain of what to call me, maybe just call me Julia.. . When I call myself disabled, I am embracing the multifaceted aspects that make me who I am. The pain and yearning I feel for the body that was will continue to be something I tend to. There are days that more than just my body is left paralyzed. This disability has taken a lot for me, but it has given me so much more.. . I won’t deny, and I want you to know, that my presence dismissed, the experiences I’ll never have, the opportunities denied, the condescending actions and comments, the uneasiness on people’s faces when they go to shake my hand and are met with a floppy paw, the limitations that are placed on me by others, still affect me. But they pale in comparison to the doors held open, the food cut into bite sizes, the remembering I need a straw in my drink, the extra thought put into ensuring an accessible experience, the invitation to participate, the taking the long way with me to find an elevator or ramp, the stretching my tight, tired legs, the list goes on and on.. . When I call myself disabled, I transform my shame and unworthiness into pride and loving acceptance - feelings of shame and unworthiness that predecessed my disability. Never in my life have I felt so grateful, so fulfilled, so me.. . Thank you to @crutches_and_spice for giving us all a platform to be heard, for bring to the forefront the beauty and light that shines from our community. And to @anhonestquad @sitting_pretty and all, thank you for being a constant source of strength and inspiration.

Hi there. A whole lot of you have joined me here in the last 24 hours as a result of #whenicallmyselfdisabled. What a freaking gift. As members of a sparsely distributed community, it's easy to feel like our experiences and perspectives apply to everyone else who bears our label. I have two favorite things about the hashtag:⁣ ⁣ 1) Other people have given language to things I've never thought to say out loud -- is it possible to be more seen than that?⁣ ⁣ 2) Other people are sharing thoughts I don't personally relate to, at least not directly. How cool to have a window into the souls of Disabled folks whose stories are so different from mine. ⁣ ⁣ Anyway, thanks for being here. I thought I'd introduce myself. ⁣ ⁣ I'm Alex. My three year old daughter took this photo today and I promised I'd share it. Thought this was an appropriate spot. ⁣ ⁣ I'm married to the dreamiest @bwyanw, and despite a lifetime of believing I "shouldn't," we have two kids. Arwen's 3 and Asa's almost 10 months. Being a mom is my jam. We live in the Redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains and spend as much time outside as we can. ⁣ ⁣ I'm 32 and a C-6/7 incomplete quad from an injury at birth. It's not common. I've only met two other SCIs with injuries from birth. It's lonely sometimes. ⁣ I'm also a tech consultant, a writer, a singer, and a less-than-mediocre ukulele player, but I'm a uke-playing *quad* so I consider that a win. Oh, and completely obsessed with interpersonal connection. Friends and family fill my cup. ⁣ ⁣ I grew up Evangelical Christian and left that faith system about 5 years ago. I'm currently working through the self-loathing and ableism I internalized in that environment and exploring my understanding of God. I write about it kind of indirectly occasionally. ⁣ ⁣ The Disabled community popping up on Instagram is giving me life. For the first time in my life, I can easily sanity check myself against my peers. I guess this is a little like what it feels like to be part of the mainstream? Whatever. I like being weird. But it's fun to have company. ⁣ ⁣ What brings you here? Or what brought you to the hashtag, if that's why you're here? TELL ME.

YAY! I’m the 2019 Paraclimbing World Champion (women RP3 category) After the spinal cord injury almost 6 years ago, I never thought I would be able to return climbing because of my weaknesses. I’m glad I still get to climb because it challenges me mentally & physically. It’s also the only time I feel more “normal” & I don’t experience physical pain. It may be a slow progress, but I’m still getting strongerThank you to everyone who helped me get here. . . @agbridgewater you have been an awesome coach, and thank you for believing in me. . . @allardusa @getbackuptoday thank you for sponsoring part of this trip and supporting my journey! . . @climbepic I’m glad I have an awesome gym to train & the support I receive from you! . . @edenundo thank you for training with me & for the countless belays! . . Paralyze This: Homeless to Professional Athlete! ● What a wild ride today’s guest has had through life! Michael Caruso grew up in a family with six siblings. Became a junior barefoot waterskiing champion at an extremely young age and got mixed up in an unhealthy lifestyle of drugs and alcohol then turned to the streets and became homeless at the age of just 22. After traveling from East Coast to West Coast and back during his nearly 5 year journey of living with no roof over his head, he has been reunited with his family, started living a more healthy life and is now ready to compete in the men's barefoot waterskiing world championships in Australia next April!! ● His life has truly unfolded in an unbelievable way and I'm lucky to have been able to get him strapped in for a chat and also to call him a friend! ● Please allow his life story to touch you and open your perspective on the way you live yours! ● Paralyze This is an interview series where I’ll be chatting up and altering the perspectives of those with an ambitious goal oriented story as well as a killer positive mentality and approach to life, all while having them completely strapped into one of my old wheelchairs and unable to voluntarily move on their own. The goal being to impose even the slightest sensation of paralysis and give a short glimpse into the reality of someone living in a similar situation with a physical disability. ● We hope this series will help alter your perspective and perception on not only your own life but the lives of everyone around you! ● Tune into ‘Cruiseybabbby Enterprises’ or ‘Paralyze This’ on YouTube every Tuesday at 6pm for a new interview! ● #ParalyzeThis #ImpulseMotivation #Perspective #Interview #InterviewSeries #YouTubeInterview #YouTube #selfconfidence #Determination #PhysicalTherapy #AmazingPeople #Inspiration #Motivation #DisabilityAwareness #WheelchairUsers #WheelchairAbility #IAmAdaptive #Paraplegic #Quadriplegic #Amputee #Spinabifida #CerebralPalsy #WheelchairLife #SpinalCordInjury #Ability #Paralyzed #WheelchairLifeStyle #BelieveInYourself #InspirationalVideos #WheelChairCommunity
