Four fluffy fibres all spun up!

This should not have worked.⠀ .⠀ I picked up my first set of poi when I was 26 years old, an age when most people are leaving creative careers rather than starting them. I was big and clumsy and had never been particularly coordinated.⠀ .⠀ And then I started spinning poi. I started learning to swing balls on strings around my body in a way that wasn't just supposed to be coordinated, but also hopefully beautiful to watch. Both of those pursuits took a long, long time.⠀ .⠀ They say it takes 10 years to make a dancer and I think they're not far off. For years I'd seen in my head the marriage of poi with dance--a delicate ballet in which an inanimate object became an extension of myself and my body's ability to express moods, ideas, and character. To have the two work together in ways that would seem as though the dance and poi were always meant to be together.⠀ .⠀ I took dance classes and performed with a company for years, then I started my own troupe and started to carve out this idea for what the marriage of these two elements could be. I saw beautiful things along the way that made me proud, elated, and stunned.⠀ .⠀ Then last year I started seeing that thing that I'd always wanted in my own work. I started seeing the poi and dance working together in harmony rather than being hastily tacked onto each other. And I feel like it opened up a whole new world for me.⠀ .⠀ And it happened in my late 30s.⠀ .⠀ A week from Sunday I'll be completing my 39th trip around the sun having just begun to find what I was looking for as a dancer and poi spinner. And I'm struck by the fact that this shouldn't have worked. By any conventional measure I'm too old to be on this journey, to be using my body in this way, to still be discovering new things it is capable of.⠀ .⠀ Or, maybe the conventional measures are broken. Maybe in the end what matters isn't how things should work out, but how they do work out. And the work we're willing to put in to insure that they do.⠀ .⠀ Want to learn to dance with me?
