I love the otherworldliness of lamplighters, out in the evening fog. It always conjures up images of Victorian London to me: Sherlock Holmes, music halls, Jack the Ripper and The Great Stink. A dangerous twilight place where anything could happen.
Lamplighters usually doubled up as watchmen, and so were considered trustworthy gents. It was a job often kept in the family and passed down from father to son. Apparently there are still some in London today, as well as other places. Not sure if Hungary still has any.
This statue - part of a triptych at Teleki László Square - is the work of Attila Mészáros (2014). Thanks to @viviannen76 for the heads up on this one!
Did you know Easter Island is one of the most remote communities in the world? Its closest inhabited neighbor is Pitcairn, 2,000km (1,200mi) to the west while the nearest continental land lies in Chile at a distance of 3,700km (2,300mi). In short, it’s not a short hop.
And so the question one must ask is: are the Easter Island statues worth the slog? Are these great hunks of rock worth the expense of a long voyage?
Having spent five days on the heart-stoppingly beautiful island, the answer is a resounding yes.

Statues of Kraków!
Spending Easter in Poland so couldn’t resist collecting a few more statues. This one is Eros Bendato by Igor Mitoraj.
There’s a sister statue of this in St. Louis, and Atlas Obscura wrote about it: “Bandages cover Eros’ face, symbolizing his imprisoned desires. According to some sources, they also represent opposing views as to whether civilization is broken beyond repair or if it’s being held together in spite of the world’s many destructive powers”.
Dezső Kosztolányi and his magic book stand next to Feneketlen Lake in Buda.
Kosztolányi was a Hungarian poet, noted for works such as ‘The Complaints of a Poor Little Child’, ‘The Golden Kite’, and his translations of Wilde, Shakespeare and the like.
The Magic Book? I really have no idea. Maybe one of you fine folks can pull something out of the hat?
Oh, and happy National Day Budapest! Have a good one.
Statue by Tibor Borbás (1979).
