Lower Antelope Canyon, also called “Hasdeztwazi” in Navajo, or “spiral rocks arches” for its translation - was probably one of the places I was looking forward to visiting the most. Regretfully, it was a bit of a disappointment. I do have to begin saying that I do not enjoy touring while traveling, and thus my opinion might be somewhat affected by this. . . Let me start by telling you a bit about this canyon. Lower Antelope Canyon is a sandstone slot canyon near to Page, Arizona. It is part of a canyon system that includes an Upper Antelope Canyon (“The Crack”). Hasdeztwazi is very popular due to its corkscrew appearance, red/orange/yellow walls and beautiful light that enters easily given its “V” shape. . . Since 1997, the Navajo tribe made this beautiful rock formation a Navajo Tribal Park, and hence it is only accessible through a guided tour ($50 p/p). Yes, accessing the canyon might be dangerous due to slippery staircases and flash floods, but... I felt like the tour was way too crowded (and by this I mean ~150 people in a period of an hour), with guides every 10 people or so pretty much breathing down your neck pushing you to move faster. When I travel, specially out in the nature.. I do want to have time to enjoy the view and absorb the place. Here, well, I couldn’t. Crowded places mean long lines, loud noises and overall a poor experience. We spent over 1 hour trying to walk a mile-long canyon.. so you can imagine how heated and boring it got after a while... . . Nevertheless! The canyon itself is lovely. You should still visit if its on your bucket list, just bear in mind that you might encounter with something other than what you expected. As you can see, we managed to get a pretty decent shot (well, maybe like 3! So high that it was thought only angels could land here... . . Probably the toughest and most dangerous hike I’ve done to date, with very narrow trails ending in a thousand foot drop on each side. The view was absolutely worth it, though! For sure will be posting more about this place . . . Surprised to see how well my hair did in the 5 mile hike .
