What’s on the chopping block today? TIME POINTS I woke up with strep throat this morning and am walking around my lab like this because there is 0% chance I am letting months ~if not years~ of preparing for this specific experiment go down the drain. Why clinical experience even matters ~ You’re working so hard on your grades and are doing great. You spend hours and hours studying for the MCAT for that nice shiny score. You even grab some solid shadowing hours! So, why does clinical experience even matter? . ✯ Well, what is clinical experience? ✯ . ✯ Any job (paid or unpaid) where you are responsible for caring for patients. You must be ‘close enough to smell them’/ the person actively providing care of some kind. This comes in many forms: Hospice worker, CNA, medical assistant, patient care tech, phlebotomist, x-day tech, personal care taker, etc. . ✯ Isn’t shadowing enough? ✯ . ✯ No. Shadowing is passive. You will not have someone yelling at you, crying with you, holding your hand for support, laughing with you, sharing stories with you, or divulging their deepest fears to you. Taking care of patients is an honor and privilege and if you, as a premed, don’t want clinical experience, that is something you really need to figure out. This is not a ‘oh med school is forcing me to get clinical experience’ this needs to be a ‘I’M SO FREAKING LUCKY THAT I GET TO ALREADY WORK WITH PATIENTS WOOO’ feeling. . ✯ Your career is still in the ‘pre’ stages. It’s a loooooong way until you’re practicing medicine and honestly you want to know NOW if you actually like it or not. You may be shocked at what you *thought* you liked! . ✯ You will actually be gaining so much real-life experience by working in a clinical setting. Not for your resume, for your personal development. I can’t tell you how many times I remembered information because of a patient I met! You wanna succeed in medicine? Start working in healthcare. . ✯ It is not good enough to write a personal statement about details of your life. Your personal statement is not about you . It’s about what YOU want to do for OTHERS, what YOU want to contribute to this world, and WHY you want to do all of that as a doctor. The only way you can know that you actually like medicine is having a “provider”-patient relationship. . ✯ Finally, adcoms are looking for what has prepared you for med school. Your app is not competitive without clinical experience. ⚕

Top things I’m nervous about ~ It’s important to me that you all know I am not going to lie about any part of this journey. I am not going to gild medicine or make it seem like it’s all glamour shots. So, with a week to go, here’s the tea. I’m really nervous about the immediate transition. I haven’t studied for 8 months (and really more like a year because I didn’t need to work too hard my last semester of college). I already know I’m going to be thrust into the deep end of the pool and the information will consume me. I KNOW I’ll adapt, but I’m nervous for those first few weeks. I’m nervous about finding a good study routine. Gap time is great, but I honestly wake up at 9-10 AM and dictate my entire days. Med school will not be like that and I’m nervous for the ease back into strict routine — also excited though. I’m super nervous about breaking my phone addiction. I was actually great at this during undergrad but, as embarrassing as it is, I average like 8 hours of screen time a day right now. Between Netflix, Instagram, Facebook, and my business, I NEED to start easing off screen time NOW. Starting this week, I bought a REAL alarm clock lol and my phone will be sleeping in the living room. Ya, I am nervous about breaking this habit but I’m determined. I’m scared to death of STEP 1. No I’m not a gunner kid. I’m a student who is interested in competitive specialty and didn’t do great on the MCAT. I know there is zero correlation between the scores, but I’m so nervous about this test already. I intend to do everything in my power to make the score I need; it starts in 1 week. I’m nervous about making friends. I know I’m a grown adult (well kinda ) but I still get nervous about integrating into a new community because I was soo comfy with undergrad! Overtime, the transition comes naturally, but yes sure I am nervous about it. Everyone wants to fit in! I’m stressed about balance. I hear so many people talking about ‘losing themselves’ during medical school and I definitely felt that during the MCAT. Priorities are a choice, so I’m determined to focus on my interests when possible. It’s okay to be scared but don’t let the fear hinder you. T-7️⃣
