Herkese selam!

Hello to everyone! ♀️ We started this week very intensely. But I know that nothing can be achieved without sacrifice. We are so close to the beta process for the @friseapp. We are very happy and tired. If you want to be a test user for @friseapp. You can reach me by dm or mail.❤♀️#friseapp #friseiscoming
THE INTERNSHIP ️⠀
.⠀
.⠀
.⠀
More than 1,000 students will work at PNNL this summer. PNNL offers a wide range of internships in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and business fields. Internships can be completed either during the summer or the academic year.⠀
.⠀
.⠀
Collectively, the national laboratories train and educate more than 250,000 K–12 students and 22,000 K–12 educators, and 8,600 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers annually, providing a tremendous boost to the nation’s resources in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). ✅⠀

One of the benefits I'm most thankful for as a software engineer is flexible and remote working. It has enabled me to look after my loved ones, travel home to Seattle more than I'd ever be able to otherwise (~once or twice a year vs every two years), and take care of life things when the only option is during the work day.
.
Part of these benefits stem from the nature of the job and part from my employer. To be a developer, for the most part, all you need is a computer, internet connection, and a knack for problem solving. This combined with an employer like @Microsoft who really respects its employees and understands that life happens and sometimes you just can't be in the office that day makes flexible and remote working possible.
.
What are your fave programmer perks?

Here it goes I read an article today titled “Of mice and scientists” in the monthly @theasbmb Magazine that addressed a topic I am currently working though and have been hesitant to blog about - animal work . A biomedical device I developed to minimize and reverse hearing loss has reached the point to warrant animal studies to determine if it will move forward for future use in humans. Sounds cool to help people hear again, right? Yes, until you really process what animal work entails (I am an animal lover and will not get into this ). •
Dr. Daniel Bolon, a professor at @umass, artfully discusses the internal moral conflict he had when asked to perform animal work during graduate school. Dr. Bolon also mentions a surprising other emotion he had during this time - “comfort and trust in following instructions” . How many of you can relate with this ? I personally feel good when I check items off of a checklist as I work through a protocol, or when I can email my PI saying I completed everything she requested ♀️✔️. However, the inherent danger in that statement is obvious. Throughout history we can see what humans are capable of without even thinking about their actions, all because they felt a sense of accomplishment in completing a task assigned to them. Have you ever been asked to do something you personally did not agree with ? I am curious to hear your opinions on this !
•
*I came to a compromise with my PI and will not be performing the animal work myself*

Sunny, 75 and working outside !! Just kidding it’s almost 90 in Miami currently (yikes). Being fair skinned, I take SPF seriously. A colleague in the dermatology department and I were discussing the upcoming summer and the current debate on the toxic effect chemicals in sunscreen have on our native coral reefs . Palau, Hawaii, and Key West (3 hours from my home) have all banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, as these chemicals have been shown to be toxic to our marine environment ☠️. With ~14k tons of sunscreen being deposited in the oceans annually, that’s enough to make me think twice about my choice of sunscreen. Scientists also say that due to the large volume and dynamic nature of the ocean, it’s hard to say exactly how that toxicity translates to reef viability . Their suggestion while we wait for more research to be conducted? Minimize *chemical* sunscreen usage and maximize *physical* sunscreen usage - wear a hat and sunshirt!! ⛱☀️ #spf #savethefishies #drdevphd
